Bloodline- Hate Procession-CD (Canonical Hours)

mmmm Barbaric noise black metal with a strong hypnotic melodic cold tone. Reminds me a lot of bands like Burzum, Xasthur and Leviathan.. The synthic drums and bass lines add a very electro industrial vibe to the grim shouted vocals. Bloodline have a martial on top of all this to make i t akin to bands like Marduk, Puissance and even Sophia at times. There is a fine line between Black metal and Martial Industrial with this release. Its seems to be a black metal super group with members of Shining, Diabolicum an Naglfar to name a few. Bloodline has a very unnerving and disturbing collection of artwork from Murdered, Murderers and Terrorist in the pages. Just by the 1st few track you can tell this release was a labor of Torment and madness in the making. Bloodline is not an easy listen but the pay off is well worth it. Experimenting in the Metal, Industrial and Neoclassic genres pays off very well for this unit. I very much look forward to more..

Malfeitor -Incubus-CD (Agonia Records)

Black Death with the grimest of all Black vocal style we have here. This does from time to time become a blast fest but this is how Malfeitor wants its and that is very clear. I almost want to call this war metal as it reminds me a lot of Bloodstorm in the style and sounds presented to the listener. The droning cold BM style of the old Poland and Nord guard is very much present here as well. Malfeitor like to give you the Florida death metal sound in a lot of the lead guitar work going on too. There is a very high Satanic / Corpse Paint factor in a band like this . They are looking to remove the thoughts of joy from the listener and show them the world is not a great place . There is pain and suffering and this is what makes us all human in the end... Agonia as become the new Full Moon Production to me with there band and ideals the present to the world. Enough said...

Tournament- years old- CD (Forcefield Records)

late 80s/ early 90's Indie Noise rock is making a big comeback to my ears and with Tournament they have the love of bands like Jesus Lizard, Surgery and Helmet with a bit of Sabbath like groove moments thrown in just to make it all the more of a kick ass sound. Also if you remember bands like Green Magnet School, Guzzard and Janitor Joe then you got a very good cross reference on what this band is doing the manic guitar, vocals just spewing out anger and the drums and bass just looking to be loud dirty and nasty. This band would have be Subpop, Touch and Go or SST golden boys back in the day. There not really more to this release other then it makes me remember want Rock Bands cared about making creative foreward thinking track that werent 3 :30 4/4 beat based commerical fodder. GET THIS and learn your indie properly...

New Reviews July 22nd 2009.....

CITIES LAST BROADCAST "The Cancelled Earth" CD (Cyclic Law)

I understand this a project from the man behind KAMMARHEIT but for me Cities last broadcast is a far more interesting project. I maybe just that ghostly sounds, field records and deep dark ambience if done right is just simply mindblowing . What we have hear is a wonderful collection of haunting Drift ambient with a very spacial and distance feeling almost like you alone and waiting for the end of days. The airy loops, deep drones and icy string sounds that come across are symphonic all in there own minimalist brilliance. The reverbed sounds of trains and the outdoors in general are amazing. I love the people and children in the distance. Cities last Broadcast would make fantastic soundtracks to fringe videogames and to Thriller , Horror and Scifi films . He should really look into doing such. The tones of bells, machines and broken world with no hope really comes through on all these tracks. It was well worth 10 yrs of collected sounds to get a release like " The Cancelled Earth" . I hope its not another 10 yrs for the next.

KARJALAN SISSIT "Fucking Whore Society" CD (Cyclic law)

This is what I was waiting for Karjalan Sissit is the master of apocalyptic industrial nightmare with a strong neoclassic/ symphonic backdrop. If vocals are always deep spoken or screamed in a violent and abrasive fashion. I put K.S. in the same league as bands like Puissance, Sophia, In Slaughtered Natives and Nordvargr . As the man knows how to create a soundscape that is oppressive, majestic and powerful all in the same breathe. I never understood by this project didn't attain higher status in the Post Industrial landscape of CMI, ColdSpring and Tesco realms. I love the dark percussive sounds mixed with the almost tormented / tortured vocal lines. Karjalan Sissit is were Ambient, Doom, Martial and Neoclassic all come at one point and breeds a life all its own. We all know this has more appeal then it is given at this time. I would love to see what a full visual DVD on his track would be like. I'm sure it would scar most of you out there. This world needs a good cleasing and Karjalan Sissit is taking a big step in the right direction.

COLD CAVE — cremations — CD (Hospital Productions)

This is one of the most unusual listens I've had in some time Cold Cave sound electro music that wants to be Coldwave and Symphonic at the same time but its heavily distorted and if I had to say it sounds like someone I would say its a mix of Canaan and This Empty Flow if you have ever heard those two bands. I really like it its almost like if you took bands like Joy Divison or Depeche mode and fuzzed them out in a really fucked up manner. I understand this is a demo/ live recording of early material but that would make we really hear what they will sound like on a proper CD release as these tracks are very impressive in there own rights. The gothic vocals and drum machine in the 80's club beat style really takes these tracks to a different place then I was expecting. I know some of you will get what I mean but this but there is a Coil/ Nurse with wound style going on with some of the middle tracks. I know I can not be the only one to hear this. The last batch of songs from 2007 remind me of a mix of early waxtrax meets sebadoh . The lo fi indie stuff with 4 track noise mashups. Hospital productions as released one crazy fun release that will not be for everyone but is wicked pissa of time for me.

MALKUTH — sefirah gevurah — CD (Hospital Productions)

Raw , Primitive Black metal from NYC this seems to be trying to show the world you don't need to be blistering and epic to make great Black metal remember the early days of Black metal in Norway and Sweden even some of the early metal from Poland this reminds me of Graveland, Early Mayhem and Enslaved in the way its created with just guitars, the polka drum sound and the low end bass rumble. If you want your Black metal with symphonic elements then you barking up the wrong tree. This is at its essence Tru Black metal the kind that scared the world 15-20 yrs ago and its good to see bands like this return to the roots of where it all came from and add a new level or loathing and disgust to way of life it was to some in 1990-1991... Malkuth show that again this side of the ocean can prove itself to the art of the Black....

Wolf eyes- always wrong-CD (Hospital Productions)

If you don't know who Wolf eyes are and follow the noise scene you have been living under a major rock. Wolf Eyes are the modern savior of the Industrial Noise Rock scene. I've seen them live and its several guys with pedals, machines, percussion and broken instruments creating a sonic wall of destruction that is only close to what can be called the end of the world on stage. The vocal styling are dirty, raw and full of piss and vinegar as well. With "Always wrong" This unit continues on the path of sonic terrorism in the strongest of methods. Wolf Eyes are the Sonic Youth or Swans of the Industrial Noise realm its that simple. There are no one that really sound like that ever . You know its Wolf eyes within moments of any song. This band has seen the heights of Subpop records unheard of for noise acts and have worked with everyone inbetween. Hospital Productions is a perfect home for this release as Dom respects and crafts all his releases to fit an understand and sickness for great underground art.. We all look forward to the next great Wolf Eyes release enough said....

Ambassador Gun- When in Hell-CD (Pangea Recordings)

Ok this is going to be a short one. Ambassador Gun is just a metalcore/grind band using all the same tried all the bands of the past have. There not original like Napalm Death or Impaled or even silly or fun like Anal Cunt or Meatshits.. There mix that Post hardcore sound of today with the grind that just pisses me off Do not mix bands from the new Pop Post Hardcore scene into your sound then grind out. This is just a band with no real direction trying to find its way. Its a damn same too because the band can play very well and has talent just hidden by wanting to be famous in the genre already over flooded by subpar work. I'm going to have to pass on this big time..

A Forest of Stars- The Corpse of rebirth-CD (Transcendental Creations)

Forward thinking black metal, Post Black metal, Experimental Black Metal its all what A Forest of Stars is showing me to be unique, interesting, passionate and down right great piece of work. For fans of bands like Agalloch, Alcest, Wolves in the throne room, Deinonychus, In the Woods, Code & Solefald you will fall in love with the Epic sounds that are equal parts, Metal, Folk and Ambient going on to mix to a full picture. Yes if you are not a fan of long tracks this will be something that will become boring to you rather quickly as A Forest of Stars builds and layers there web of sonic excellence like few other... I really love the violins and strings mixed with the vocals that are almost from a human on the brink of sanity. The guitars and drums come from a much more progressive and folk element . At times at almost want to call A Forest of Stars Extreme Post NeoFolk ( I know this is a ridiculous term but it fits whats going on here). I swear at moments this band is strongly influenced by Tenhi, Of the Wand and the Moon and Dead can Dance as well. There are moments of Devil Doll (Mr Doctor would be proud). A Forest of Stars has a lot of Doom going on in the mix of this release as well. I going to try and interview this band if possible as they have floored me with one of the 2 Best releases of 2009 so far the other would have to be Code's new release...

http://transcendentalcreations.com/

De Magia Veterum - Migdal Bavel-CD
(Transcendental Creations)

Chaos Metal would be a better term from this project. This is like electro industrial black metal with one mission and one mission alone. To destroy all living things in its path. or at the least to control it's very will. Its a whirlwind of sounds, some of the sickness vocals you can hear mixed with odd 80's synth sounds, Guitars playing 20 things at once and Drummer if human in anyway must almost stroke out after a few songs (I'm very sure these drums are electronically altered in some manner). De Magia Veterum does have a hypnotic melody about them though and it's what draws you in even deeper to the dark black place there almost borg like mind lies.. Transcendental Creations with a few labels like Ajna Offensive, Debemur Morti Productions, Prophecy Productions and Moribund Cult take the extreme in extreme music and push it to another level. Here is another band that falls in the styles like V.E.G.A, Deathspell Omega etc were there really isn't a style its all there own. Black metal that makes you question if you've ever heard real Black metal before... Excellent...

Burnt by the Sun- Heart of Darkness- CD (Relapse Records)

Icon, Original, Cutting Edge these are all things Burnt by the sun were before people were using the Post word before a music style. They mix Death Metal, Hardcore, grind, Prog Rock and Industrial elements into the next step that bands like Deadguy, Prong, Fudge Tunnel & Godflesh were doing before them. This is the old guard of Relapse that I miss and glad these guys and brutal truth back into the fold again as these where the bands in my 20's that showed me you can be heavy and experimental at the same time without compromise.. The straight to face guitar and vocal assault is just better then words can explain the rhythm section is complex and frustrated as ever and that is one of the great dynamics to Burnt by the sun. If by now you don't know if you are a fan of Neurosis, Mastodon, Isis and Dillenger Escape Plan then this will be a must own not questions needed. I'm very sad to hear this will be the final chapter of this band as with " Heart of Darkness" it sounds they have a lot more in them. Just think about guys ok??

The Impulse Eclectic interview is up...

The Impulse Eclectic

http://www.myspace.com/theimpulseeclectic

1. Tell us how The Impulse Eclectic came to be

I created The Impulse Eclectic back in 1999 purely as a solo outlet. I
had just graduated from the University of Illinois and moved back to
Chicago to find a job. I was drumming in a band during college, and
did some guitar in a band in high school for a few years before that,
so I felt like I was getting to a point where I knew a thing or two
about how to arrange a song properly without it sounding like total
crap.

2.Where did the name The Impulse Eclectic come from.

I don’t think a whole lot of thought went into it actually. I used to
have a bad habit of daydreaming and thinking up outrageous song titles
or band names just for the hell of it. I think this was a product of
one of those idiotic brainstorming sessions. A friend and I also
created a death metal band at the time called Sawed in Half, but
unfortunately we never got one practice in.

3. Being from Chicago this is huge Post Hardcore/Post Rock Scene were
you influenced by Touch and Go, Thrill Jockey or Drag City??

I would say some of the bands on those labels were an early influence
for sure. The mid 90’s was a crazy and prolific time for music. Touch
and Go had some amazing releases, as did Dischord, Sub Pop. I was also
listening to a lot of punk rock at the time, and some interesting
melodic punk stuff like Seaweed and Samiam that was really different.
All of those things were influences. Chicago bands in particular that
I admired were Pegboy, The Jesus Lizard, Tar, and Shellac. But there
were tons of great bands and it would be silly to name just a few –
the entire vibe and experience definitely had an impact on me. We were
music geeks for sure.

4. How did you come to work with Jason Walton of (Agalloch/Nothing).

I’ve been an Agalloch fan for a while, couple years. Not only am I a
huge fan of their records from a songwriting perspective, but they are
great sounding albums too, sonically speaking. I read somewhere, I
think it was on blabbermouth, that Jason had opened a mastering
studio. I figured he would do good work so I contacted him. It was a
great experience.

5. Did you choose to self release Canyon of Spiders-CD or was it done
out of need??

Both. I’ve never spoken to a record label in my life - indie or big
time. It’s not that I’m opposed to them or anything, but most times I
visit various labels’ websites to investigate submitting a demo or
something, there are always things like “we are not accepting demos,
don’t waste your time” or else things like “if you don’t know anything
about our label, then leave us alone” and stuff like that. I find that
very off-putting. Not necessarily a huge motivator to go begging for a
label to release my stuff. And it’s difficult from a press standpoint
too, because most publications aren’t going to review anything that is
not on an official label, so the internet needs to be used in a much
more effective manner in order to self-release anything these days.
Blogs are cool because they are willing to give us “unsigned” artists
a chance, which essentially makes things more democratic for anyone
trying to get their music heard who is not backed by a label or being
heavily promoted. And I’m willing to give it a go, because I think the
model is changing a bit. I like creating music above all, and sharing
it with the world on my terms is kind of important to me. I’m not
obligated to do anything else with the music other than let it exist.
It people want to buy it great, but that is never going to be a
motivator to make music. I think in 15 years of doing this, I’ve sold
maybe a couple hundred albums total with all of my previous bands and
solo materials combined. Any label would probably slap me if I was
signed and those were my “official” record sale figures. I constantly
give my material away for free more often than not, and if more
musicians would realize that any serious money is probably never going
to be made - label or no label - you might start to see more decent
music being created overall. The art is what matters. If people want
to make money then they need to either join a cover band or get a real
job.

6. Is Red Planet Syndrome EP very different from the new material?

Red Planet Syndrome was much more vocal-oriented, the songs were a bit
simpler too. I had just come out of drumming for two Chicago-area rock
bands for several years, so I had to basically re-learn my guitar a
bit since I wanted to dive back into arranging my own songs again. I
didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew getting back to guitar
after such a long time drumming, so I went a bit simpler on that EP
with the song structures and stuff.

7. Edward Nudd you seem to be the band does The Impulse Eclectic
perform live much and if so is it a rotating line up?

I almost never perform live. I have done some solo gigs in the last
year or two with guitars and a backing drum/keyboard sequence, and
they were enjoyable for the most part. I am hesitant to ask other
people to put in time and effort into something like this, because
they all have their own bands and lives too. If it was my main focus
in life and I was insanely driven to conquer the world or something, I
would probably enlist people, but it’s more or less a solo project. I
do work well in band situations too, but that’s different - I like to
work democratically with other musicians if I happen to be in a band
with them, rather than control everything. Danzig I am not.

8. I didn't hear vocals on Canyon of Spiders were vocals on the Red
Planet Syndrome??

Yes, RPS was very vocal-oriented. Vocals are a strange thing for me
nowadays, because I’ve actually grown less confident in my singing
voice as I’ve gotten older, which is odd because for most people it’s
the opposite. In high school I played in a faster kind of melodic
punk/hardcore band, and I did a ton of vocals and had a pretty good
confidence at the time. Once I got more interested in actually
learning how to play my instrument properly, I kind of realized that
certain vocals of mine were sometimes misplaced, or even asinine
sounding. But hey, we’re always our own worst critic, right? The songs
I began writing for “Canyon of Spiders” were coming out a bit more
complex musically, so I really didn’t think vocals were necessary on
most of it. It would have taken away from the dynamic.

9. Are you big fan of the digital age of release or do you like CD,
Print Zines rather then Webzines and Sat/ Internet Radio?

I’m a CD guy for the most part, but it’s hard to avoid digital files
and I do have plenty of those too. I read both print zines and online
zines – there are a lot of great ones out there, including yours.
Internet radio I don’t check out too often, but if there are
interviews or something with a band or artist I’m a huge fan of, I am
certain to check those types of things out. I’m still a music fan
first and foremost, and that won’t be changing anytime soon.

10. Is there a running theme or idea with your songs or is it more
just emotion and feeling?

It’s emotionally driven for sure, but there's no specific concept or
anything. The last few years I’ve been listening to a lot of prog rock
and certain bands with more atmospheric qualities, and I think it’s
definitely crept into my music. I like the idea of music taking us to
a completely different place that has very little to do with our
day-to-day reality, and that is the goal that makes me comfortable
writing toward also.

11. If you could work with any artist who would it be any why?

That’s a very difficult question. Maybe Mikael Ã…kerfeldt from Opeth,
but I would probably be too nervous and wind up getting sick. He’s one
of the best songwriters around in my opinion.

12. Your sounds mix many indie style with a Metallic and Post rock
sound do you feel your music works better with extreme music or more
experimental music crowds.

I would say mostly experimental crowds, along with more open-minded
extreme music fans. I can definitely see certain types of extreme
music fans seriously disliking my music, and that’s completely fine
with me. We can’t all sound like Cannibal Corpse. With that being
said, I do listen to a lot of extreme music and generally connect with
others who do also, so I would hope those people could at least give
this a shot, or at the bare minimum, get through one song!

13. Is The Impulse Eclectic your only outlet or do your create other
types of music under other names.

It’s my only outlet at this point, but that could definitely change.
I’m open to surprises.

14. You seem to have a myspace site and no other sites do you think
myspace is all bands need these day???

I had an individual site for while, but I didn’t think it looked very
good and I didn’t want to dish out a ton of money for a slicker web
site design. It seems like everyone else is on myspace, and a lot
people are there searching out music too, so for better or for worse
it’s kind of become the standard. I also think it can be difficult for
bands to re-direct myspace traffic to their individual websites
because of the simple fact that it’s hard to pull people away from
myspace or facebook once they are hooked into it. They want to browse
around and be voyeuristic for hours on end, and the websites
themselves promote this behavior 100%, so they are given no real
incentive to leave the social networking environment and check out any
individual band sites unless they are huge fans of that band. It’s
kind of sad in a way.

15. Thank for your time any closing thoughts here..

Thank you!

Culted Interview is up !!!

Culted Interview

http://www.myspace.com/culted

1.Tell us the story of how Culted came to be..

About two or three years ago I was asked by Mike (guitar, bass, noise etc) to contribute some sounds to the Of Human Bondage –The Goat Sessions Volume 3 album. After that we kept in touch, discussing musical and personal interests and I suggested we put a band together and record some slow doomy metal and see what came out of the sessions. Matt (guitar, bass noise, percussion) and Kevin (drums) joined in and thus Culted was born.

2. Is it very hard to create music with never being the same room to record?

Not really, with today’s technology it’s really not that difficult. We exchanged words via email and sounds via wav files and built on each other’s ideas as they went back and forth. I’m planning to go to Canada to record for the next album though

3. How did you come to work with Relapse?

I'm also in a project called Keplers Odd, and we released an album on Desolation House that is a sub-label to Relapse that was created to only release 12 albums. The projects they put out focused more on experimental, noise and ambient music so I had been in contact with them before. And when I told them about Culted they were eager to have a listen. And needless to say, they liked it and offered us a deal.

4. Your a mix of Doom, Black metal and Industrial from what I hear.. I hear alot of Neurosis, Godflesh and Dolorian in your music are you influenced by these at all.

That sums it up quite well. Both Neurosis and Godflesh are bands that I know Mike and I are heavy into. And I have heard people talk about them (as well as Swans) in regards to Culted so I guess they must have had an impact on us and our sound. That said, I believe that we don’t really sound like that much out there, holding our own ground, having a sound of our own.

5. Will Culted ever play live or record as a group or is it always going to be done by several people in different parts of the world.

As I stated above, I’m planning a trip to Canada next year to record for our next full-length, live performances however aren't a priority at the moment. Kev, our drummer recently finished his masters in Sociology, Mike's in university and he and his wife just had their second kid at the end of May, the studio which is at Matt's house just flooded over the weekend and I'm in the middle of renovating my apartment. So we might play live someday but right now it’s just too challenging to put something like that together.

6. Is there a running theme on your Debut CD Below The Thunders Of The Upper Deep?

Not really, but there is a connection between them because they were all inspired by the darker side of spiritualism and psychology, and even some current world events. I like to keep my lyrics abstract so the listener can interpret the concept as they will and form their own opinion.

7. What are Culted trying to create in sound and style with this band?

At the beginning we set out to make blackened doomy metal, and in some ways we succeeded. But it turned out to be so much more than that mainly because we didn't want to make a record like one we'd all heard before. And because it takes time as we send the files back and forth, there's time to reflect and build on our ideas in a way that I don't think happens when everyone's together in a studio listening to each other lay down their tracks.

8. You seem to only use myspace as a mean site do you feel this is the best way for band to contact the world now?

I prefer an official site to visit when browsing the net but myspace and other sites like it are quite useful for promoting bands. And for people like me that are always on the lookout for new projects to listen to these kinds of sites are gold. That said, the downside of these networking sites is how big corporations use them to gather information about the users.

9. Will there be another Culted releases or was this a one time event?

Right now we have a MCD recorded that hopefully will be out at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. And we will start to work on new material asap. Im hoping we will have a new full-length album recorded within a year or so.

10. Do you feel that independent music is the way to go verses larger labels or major label with the smaller sales of Cds and music these days?

Most definitely. Independent music will always have a following of dedicated people. The fast-food music industry is slowly bleeding out and dying and I for one think it’s about time.

11. The vocals remind me so much of a band called Black Doom called Ancient Wisdom do you know the band you just have the vibe going on.

I just have the vibe going on. I have never listened to Ancient Wisdom but I have heard the name coming up in conversations from time to time. Will have to check them out.

12. thank you for your time any closing thoughts here ..

Thanks for taking an interest in Culted.
Cheers!

DARK CELEBRATION -Phlegeton: The Transcendence of Demon Lords-CD (Paragon Records)

Paragon is one of those US label that has really been impressing me over the years and there is nothing less then good things to say about Dark Celebration. They are a very talented Death Metal troop from South America . Dark Celebration take a good nod from the 90's Florida Death metal scene specially from bands like Brutality and Obituary. There is a kindship in sound to the band The Chasm as well esp in the guitar tones. Dark Celebration add a hardcore element to there sound that some of the newer Death metal bands have been working with as well. So there is a modern tone to the tride and true sound of the old school death metal love going on here. I do like the very Black metal way the vocals come across from time to time as well. The final piece of the puzzle to this is a major live of thrash as I hear a ton of bands like Forbidden and Sodom in the structure of the sounds as well. This is a well rounds metallic force that must be checked out from a label that love to support lesser known artist...

Eagle Twin-THEY SPIT; FIRE AND WISDOM IN ONE BREATH-CD (Southern Lord)

Eagle Twin are that brand of fucked up disjointed Doom, Noise, Post Rock mix that was started with bands like Earth, Neurosis and Godflesh/Jesus etc but Eagle twin like to add some hardcore elements into there music and indie rock for good measure. The vocals are deep and throaty but never in growl or gutteral manner. They remind me a lot of Attila in Mayhem and King Buzzo in Melvins. The guitars and bass are dirty yet fuzzed and droning at the same time. The drums come from a Jazzcore/ Avant side of things and the two styles together come across amazing. I understand this ex members of Iceburn and this is were the Jazzy Hardcore side comes from. But I swear Eagle Twin wants to be 2 bands in one Mevins and Earth if you can mix the two at times I'm telling you its Eagle Twin. " They Spit" is a stellar showing of have to mix 4 styles of vastly different music and make it an ass kicking on CD.....

The Impulse Eclectic- Canyon of Spiders-CD ( Self Released)

The 1st thing that comes to mind from this new Chicago, IL unit is bands like Rodan, Early Smashing Pumpkins, Isis and Russian Circles to you get my point right Heavy Indie meets Bombastic Post rock. As we go through the 1st track its an instrumental . There is a atmospheric sound that goes from the fragile to deep and dark all in the same movements. The mix of Clean and Fuzzed and Distorted guitar with a very prog/jazz rhythm section is want is really catching my ear at the moment. If you Like Pelican your going to love this band my friends. Let also let the world know Jason Walton (Agalloch/ Nothing/ Esp like Sloth) Mastered this little known gem. If a label like Hydra Head, Kranky or Southern Don't jump on this band I will be shocked to say the least. There is a strong hint of Agalloch going on over these 6 six too. I can listen to albums like this 10 or 20 times as vocals really take away from the magic of bands like this. Check it out it will have you coming back for more...

INCOMING CEREBRAL OVERDRIVE-CONTROVERSO-CD (Supernaturalcat)

This comes from a long line of bands that are doing the complex avant Post Hardcore we love (Keelhaul, Dillenger Escape Plan, Deadguy thing). Incoming Cerebral Overdrive are very good at what they create but its all band done by bands over and over again for the last 10-15 yrs now. Were bands like Born Against, Deadguy, Converge and even Coalese (who they seem to worship). Have perfected this sound. I wish there was just more independent thought is the songs here as If you give them time and a few more release ICO will sound nothing like this release and I think that is way I have major hope for this band. Sometimes its just better to kill you idols that become them. ICO should check otu bands like Black Army Jacket, Human Remains and Burnt by the sun and they would be well off in the end as I think these sounds would that them to the next level for amazing release. But its just my feedback use it as you wish..

The 69 Eyes- Back in Blood-CD (The End Records)

So when did The End Records decide to go retro and start signing late 80's/ early 90's Hard rock / Indie bands but with The 69 Eyes we have some of the best Hard rock elements going on here of that time frame if you loved The Cult, Hanoi Rocks and Sister of Mercy then my readers this is the CD you need to jump and get asap. The Male/Female vocal mix at times I swear is that Goth/Glam Hardrock sound made so famous from euro bands of the time. There is a full on AC/DC love in the guitar and bass moments too. This is the next big fad to come back I think is the bands that ruled MTV from 1986 to 1990 . Do you remember bands like Bang Tango and Jetboy from the LA scene these two bands have a lot in common with what The 69 Eyes are doing with Back in Blood too. I really like this and if that wrong I don't want to be right... Just on a final thought. I think they should hook up with Duff Mckagens new band " Loaded" as with them and the band "HIM" I think the Hard rocking Goth kids will just cream themselves on a tour like this...

Horna- Musta Kaipuu-CD (Debemur Morti Productions)

So from what I'm reading these are tracks from 2004 that seem to have never been released on CD ever. There is a melody to them that I only hear from time to time in Horna. This is not to say that a lot of Musta Kaipuu isn't raw bleak and black as all get out. Horna seems to like to hit to different directions with there sounds a more classic motorhead meets black metal sound that bands like Satyricon and Khold are doing these days then the very old kvlt black metal that bands in the days of old are very akin too. Horna is a very mixed bag of tricks with what they call black metal as some times is just sounds like old school classic metal with the music side till though grim and hatefilled vocals come and kick you in the teeth. I almost expect to hear King Diamond or Slayer at time with the way the riffing and song structures are created. Horna can really throw you off the trail of what you would typically think black metal is and that is one of the reason I really like this title more then others I've heard before by this unit.

Thornafire - Vorex Deconstrucción-CD (Ibex Moon)

Wow does someone love Celtic Frost but is Spanish my friends. This power house is from Chile and they are just amazing powerful kick ass blacked Death Metal nothing more nothing less. If you dig bands like Krisiun, The Chasm, Hate Eternal and even at time Napalm Death then this is a not miss for you. Even the synths though low in the mix add such an amazing layer to all that comes from Thornafire. There are moment of even San Fran Heavy Thrash like Testament and Exodus going on in the guitar and drum work. Thornafire know how to make extreme metal catchy as all can be. There are riffs that will not leave my head esp on track 3 "Deconstrucción". Ibex moon is a great place for extreme metal as there label head is the man behind Incantation so he knows it all as hes been there all before. Thornafire is not breaking any real new ground. They are just taking it back from the bands that don't belong there and in death metal thats what we really need in 2009.

Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow-CD (Candlelight)

I was not ready for this at all , all the other Anaal Nathrakh releases Ive heard have been more black metal and grindcore mixed. With this Anaal Nathrakh have moved into a very new direction. With this album they have gone into all I can say is Black Industrial Doom. If you could mix bands like Aborym, MZ412, Stalaggh and 1st Pitch Shifter album all into one mindfuck of a release then you would have a close idea but then there are moments where bands like Borknagar or Arcturus would feel very at home at. There is nothing but Epic , Bombastic and Chaotic going on here then the melody lines come soaring in loud and clear. In the Constellation of the Black Widow will not be for most and that is an understatement but for those of us that like there music on the edge of control and madness there is no place better to reach then this kind of majestic album. Candlelight this title will be one of legends in years to come mark my words...

We Insist Interview is up!!!

WE INSIST!

http://www.weinsist.com/
http://www.myspace.com/weinsistband

1. You’re still a newer band in the US - tell us a bit about how We Insist! came about?

WE INSIST! had a gestation period of about 4 to 5 years, which is a lot even for a 6-headed mammal. We only knew what we didn't want to be. We found out that all our different musical backgrounds could merge and give birth to INNER POND (2001), our third release but for us, our first record.

We try to be surprised by our own music, to make it sound unusual without ever forgetting that we need melodies and that we're writing songs...

2. Your new album THE BABEL INSIDE WAS TERRIBLE is a very interesting name - where did it come about and is there a running theme on it?

This title has been taken from a line that was meant to be in the song “Our Countries” and didn't end up in it.

It's also about the numerous backgrounds of everyone in the band and the way they're mixed in the music.

You could also say that it's about incomprehension between people.

In addition to that, we're playing more and more outside of France and we like it better abroad, which is also why we thought about languages and Babel. Just try to picture a room with many people talking at the same time, and being overwhelmed by words that are only sounds. Our “language” is sometimes better understood abroad. That’s the “terrible” point !

3. We Insist! seem to love to mix jazz, old school indie rock and post hardcore elements all mixed into one. Where did the sound come from? I can here a strong Touch and Go and Subpop style and sound through out the release.

All of this is really good to hear from you but it's never been on purpose that we sounded like this or that. Of course we've been listening to a lot of different music. If there's jazz in our music it's really unconscious, we don't consider our albums being one bit jazz oriented.

4. I've only heard the last 2 releases - are early releases very different from these ?

Yes !
INNER POND (2001) has a more progressive flavor, I guess. More details, more added instruments (trombone, accordion, trumpet, etc.), a bit less vocal parts. There're maybe more jazz influences in that one. CRUDE (2004) is more violent, the songs are more gathered and short. The production is pretty bad, but it's a more straight forward album. Nevertheless, those 2 albums really are the roots of what we’ve done since.

5. Do you feel the lyrics are just as important as the music or feel the sonic element is what is most important in rock music ?
We're not doing proper songwriting and of course for us the music is more important than the lyrics. This doesn't mean the lyrics have no meaning. We still don't want them to sound like “Ooh Ooh baby I love you!” or “I woke up this morning”… Hum, maybe we'll get there at some point, never say never…

6. Your use of avant elements just makes the music all more interesting. How does We Insist! record your releases…. in layers or as a live band with over dubs ?

All of our albums were recorded the same way: we go in the studio when the songs are finished. We know exactly what overdubs we want: how many vocal layers, extra guitars or sound effects. We record live: drums, bass, guitars, saxophones. Then we can do little patches here and there, and do the vocals in the end.

The two latest records you know where recorded with Peter Deimel at Black Box studio in France, he's an incredible sound engineer, he puts so much attention to every little detail! Everything was analog, so before he presses the records button he knows exactly what type of sound he wants for the mix. All sounds are already perfect. Everything has to be prepared from the guitar lead to the microphone. We were relying on him even more for this latest release, because he was mixing it straight after recording.

7. Does We Insist! like digital releases, internet radio, zines and 21st century media ?? Or do you miss days of vinyl, radio and print zines being the major ways ???

No we don't miss the good ol'days ! We like everything including blogspots, peer to peers, myspace, rags and 7” vinyls that we can't afford. Love the LPs though it sounds great ! If we sell enough CD we'll print some. We have a hard time getting bigger, we insist on keeping this band together, and we still didn't find any clues to earn a little bit of money with it. So yeah! Spread the word!

8. Are the members of We Insist! in any other projects? If so tell us about them.

François the saxophone player is playing in other bands mostly jazz and traditional music. He has a solo project with a VJ.

I have another band called ZARBOTH, a duo with a crazy guitar player called Phil Reptil. Our self-titled album is out on Discorporate Records, a good independent label from Dresden, Germany. We met these guys on tour with WE INSIST! and they're now close friends. The record is also out on a French label called Head Records. It's experimental noise-rock, jazz, metal and some whatever improvisation parts with me and Phil singing & yelling. www.myspace.com/zarboth

I also play with many other bands as a drummer only.

The other guys have full time jobs, and children, WE INSIST! is sometimes even too much for them.

9. Have you thought about any DVD or multimedia releases for We Insist! ?

No... lack of time and lack of money.

But we might do a video clip on “Oakleaves” later this year… A nice guy came to us with this idea, and for free. Would be great!

10. Is the response to the band very different in North America vs Europe? Do you perform to larger crowds in Europe ?

We've never been touring North America, but we'd love to… If you know any good booking guys over there ?

11. Your website is very impressive, and you also have a myspace site. Do you feel the internet has helped you grow or is it just an outlet for existing fan ?

It's a lot of time and a lot of bullshit but it does help, we couldn't do without it!

12. Thanks for the time any closing thoughts place here...

Thanks for your questions, glad you liked the new album, come and visit us sometimes. Unless we’ll tour the US… and visit Anthem, Arizona.

Cheers,

Etienne for WE INSIST!

Black Lotus (Canada)
http://blacklotusmusic.net/
http://www.myspace.com/blacklotusmetal

The foundations of Black Lotus were laid when Lindsay A. Kerr started writing songs in 2002. By the summer of 2005 several others became involved to collaborate on the distinct musical vision and Black Lotus, as a band, was born.

By December of that year the band recorded nine songs for what was to become their debut album "Light Subsides", in their hometown of Victoria, British Columbia. Chinese label Dying Empylver Productions released the album in late 2006.

At the core of Black Lotus' inspiration lie the beautiful landscapes and wilderness of their surroundings on Vancouver Island. The heart of the Pacific Northwest, formed by a perfect harmony of mountain, forest and ocean. The band's music, atmospheric black metal with a melancholic folk feel, is paired up with its visual representation; the artwork of Lindsay A Kerr.

A three song promotional EP called "The Great Mortality" caught the attention of Canadian BLEAK ART RECORDS, who signed the band for their sophomore album. The band recorded and mixed their second effort in the spring and summer of 2008. "Harvest of Seasons" was released the following October

MADE OUT OF BABIES (USA)
http://www.madeoutofbabies.com/
http://www.myspace.com/madeoutofbabies

Drawing equally from noise-rock legends like The Jesus Lizard and post-metal bands like Isis, the band developed a following quickly after the release of their debut album, Trophy. Their first 2 albums were released by Neurot Recordings, the home of many respected post-metal and post-rock bands like Isis, Neurosis, and Red Sparowes. They are currently signed to The End Records for the release of their newest album "The Ruiner".

Vocalist Julie Christmas also sings for Battle of Mice. Guitarist Brendan Tobin also plays for Red Sparowes. Bassist Eric Cooper also plays for Pigs, and is rumored to be a contributor to Thursday frontman Geoff Rickley's grindcore side project, United Nations. Drummer Matthew Egan also plays for Cleanteeth.

The Vision Bleak is a Gothic metal band from Germany formed in 2000, consisting of former Empyrium member Ulf Theodor Schwadorf and former Nox Mortis member Allen B Konstanz. The band's themes are most notably orientated towards horror. THE VISION BLEAK have never been of the modest kind. They just have to go for the grand and sweeping gesture."You cannot move away from your roots" Schwadorf says in the last Empyrium "Weiland" interview a laconic view on THE VISION BLEAK. The largest Horror theatre. Curtains up for Schwadorf and Konstanz, 2 circus entertainers emerge to catch the souls of the audience and to extend the fear and shock. Six-foot high towering guitars, a sawing melotron and voices from the grave honour the mind of horror as well as its representatives - first and foremost Max Schreck, John Carpenter, Friedrich Murnau or George Romero. Are ya ready to meet the reaper?
