New Reviews 10/30/2010

towards global holocaust- Feuersturm-CD (Scattered to the winds)

So this Duo of Blackened Thrashing Chaos comes back to my desk with a full length pro done release after a MCD that simply  changed the way I looked at BM. This time out Blaash  and RF have much more melody mix with some of the most blinding fast BM drumming and guitar noise I've ever heard from a band.  At time this band is so technical and at other times they remind me of bands like Beherit or Aborym in the madness factor. With Feuersturm tgh also add a deeper love for the abstract and industrial elements bands like MZ412 or Abruptum has given us over the years. I swear at times I think that tgh is about run off the rails of all timing and conventional musical thoughts but they always seem to pull back to a place where it seems to work perfectly again. The vocals are so possessed I just don't even know were to begin as the are beyond tormented and pain soaked there is just the last bastion on humanity in them. If you a fan of bands on labels like Moribund, Anja offensive and ATMF then this is something you need to pick of Asap.

Dakrya- Crime Scene-CD (Sensory Records)

If you have been living under a rock for the prog metal scene then Sensory would be new to you if not this is the elite of talent in this sound and style . With Dakrya we get a Female fronted Avant Prog metal force that mixes elements of Nightwish. Gathering, Bogus Blimp and Lana Lane etc. There is a strong love bands like Devil Doll and Symphony X as well but its not always so noticeable. I love the very sweet yet powerful female vocals going on here with what I would call classic Prog Rock elements but the guitars and drums get so metal at time. The synths and pianos have the 70/80's Prog sound in an ultimate fashion. The male vocals are the darker more seductive almost gothic death vox if that makes enough sense to most of you. I love the bizzare moments the most with this bad the creepy and twisted bass and guitar moments within where the synths sound like that came from the Circus of the dammed . The have a Sleepy time gorilla museum element to them as well that I hear more and more as I go through the tracks. This release is making me drool for more loving this.

Creations End- A new Begining-CD (Sensory Records)

If you like your Prog metal with a huge dose of Power metal and the arena rock vocal style then Creations End is going to put you to the floor. I'm not going to go to far on this album as your either going to get it or not after one song. So this is an all star line up of session and members from bands like  Ark, Mastermind, James Labire's Band and Zandalle . If you want to have more bands like Savatage, Dream Theatre or Angra then add this on to your wish list as they done get more talented or musically euphoric then this my friends.

View All Photos | Cover for the Clinic For Dollsphoto by Hi Res Studio | UnSun

Unsun- Clinic for dolls-CD (Armoury Records/Mystic Productions)

Goth metal is a very give or take music for me. I have to be in the mood and the vocals matter to me so much in bands like this. Bands like Theatre of Tragedy, Tristana, Tiamat  etc have done is very very well. mmm thats a lot of bands that all start with T's. Unsun on thier 2nd full length this time on Armoury/ Mystic Productions this time ( There debut was on Century Media) . If a much better and well thought out release . The 1st one sound much more cookie cutter with a much more pop element . With Clinic for dolls they have giving the music a much more dark and dirge like feeling. Also Aya vocals are way stronger in pitch and over all range.  Main musical composer is Mauser (formerly of Death metal power house Vader and Christ agony) his guitar and music arrangement as well thought out here and this is not bubblegum goth metal at all. This is indeed a 360 degree change from his past bands. Again this is not for your girlfriend . Unsun wears the metal badge with honor and pride. If the 1st release put you off check this out its really night and day stronger. Think older Lacuna Coil without male vocals and you will be very close to where Unsun is going here..

Aborym- Psychogrotesque-CD (Season of Mist)

Moving from Code666 to Season of Mist over the last 2 albums and losing Attila back to Mayhem has made this band even stronger and with Faust on Drums now there Black industrial metallic madness seems to have had a boost in production and song structure. Aborym is one of those bands that just get better with each release I would say they are much like Code or DHG were they add more and experiment the odd side of the avant metal highway to there fullest. There is always this uncomfortable melody to what they do on each release as well. Season of mist in the last yr seems to be growing by leaps and bounds they are doing the most original of the fringe metal that labels like The End and Code 666 were giving us but have the Promotional power to expose them to a world not ready for this assault. There is really much more to say other then this is a soundtrack for the sickest and deepest parts of your mind that you don't want the rest of us to know about .. Guess what ... Too Late its out now hahahahaaha.

Bilocate- Sudden Death Syndrome- CD (Kolony Records)

Bilocate is just what I would want from a band playing Metal from the Middle East (they are from Jordan). Think of bands like Nile, Salem and Melechesh. Bilocate has Eastern, Prog and very Tech Death metal elements going on with a strong love of Texture and Atmosphere going on here. The haunting way the guitars and bass line snare you in and the deep and ethereal vocals that sound like a demon in the distance calling you to your demise is just so entralling. The orchestral elements of synths and way the music flows is so epic in sound it works wonders to the over all style too. If your a fan of bands like Opeth and Agalloch this will call to you as well in that the vocals are very similar to both  and the music at moments too.  Kolony records has a band to watch here this could and very well maybe the next big band in the Metal world.

New Reviews 10/23/2010

Kryoburn-Three years eclipsed-CD (Candlelight)

This is the kind of metal that I really enjoy symphonic prog influenced Death metal .There are many bands that come to mind when I listen to Kryoburn.... Moonspell, Dan Swano, Devin Townsend and Fear Factory all come to focus when I really start digging into it love the prog and sci fi elements on the synths and overall tone of the album . The mix death vox and very melodic sung vocals work so well with the complex and harmonic guitar and bass lines and a drummer that matches Mr Hoglan for my money. There is a modern metal feel to all of this but never in the Nu metal bullshit element. From time to time I hear Katatonia creeping to there sound as well. Kryoburn has so much going for it . Just check them out.

The Wretched End- Ominous-CD (Candlelight )

So Samoth the guitars profound of Emperor and Zyklon is band with a new project that maybe his best yet as it mixed 2 things hes very good at Death metal and Hardcore elements into any extreme music style. This is the 1st time I will say I hear no Black metal elements in his guitar playing and it think hes much happier for it.  The vocals on here are very old school thrash mixed with 80's hardcore I can hear a very Sick of it all meets Cromags  vibe going on here as well.  Samoth has a very big fondness for Alex from Testament on Guitar this time as well and that I just love. The Wretched End is so damn catchy  yet the brutal element add the complete package for a band that sounds yrs ahead of where Zyklon was coming from for my money. Its real simple if you like Death, Thrash and Hardcore mixed into a tasty main course for music do not pass on this.

Borgne- Entraves de l'Âme-CD (Sepulchral Productions)

I know very little of this project other then what I have read so far. This is one of the more atmospheric of the raw/ spacial Black metal forces I've heard in a while if Summoning and Lustre were more Black I think they would be brothers in this scene. I see that Xasthur main man plays a role on this album . This is a very haunting and unsettling feel to all the tones and layers going on here. It's almost black noise at times an I have nothing against that at all. There is such an orchestral drive to this while the guitar and vocals and drums are so raw and lo fi. I really like what Borgne is presenting here.  from the lush acoustic to pure nightmarish blackened pain. Burzum, Mayhem and Older Darkthrone fans with love this as it holds just into those Ideals as well. Bombastic is yet another thought that come across very well for Borgne. I really look forward to hearing more . I just hope it isnt several yrs for that like they say it was for this .

Forteresse-Par Hauts Bois et Vastes Plaines-CD (Sepulchral Productions)
Over the last few years Black metal has been moving into two very different directions pure speed and the love of the old school punk ideals and this the emotional, atmospheric and ritualistic symphonies. While still cold , bleak and full of the horror that makes the genre thrive, Bands like Forteresse play slower , more focused and try to add the synths in for more of a soundtrack like feel to a thriller or thinking man's horror film and you know this works out so well . This is full of hope and sorrow. loss and grief and epic in the undertaking that it is trying to present. I hope this side of the Black metal scene grows and cross pollination with other genres and styles to make it even more fragmented and interesting to listen to . Bands like Forteresse  clearly love bands like Aghast, MZ412, Puissance and so many of the Cold Meat and Cold Spring Darker Neoclassic bands.  Simply just blown away by this release.

Neige et Noirceur -La seigneurie des loups-CD (Sepulchral Productions)
This is one of those bands I am having a very hard time making my mind up on its a mix of Folk music, Viking elements, War themes, Raw BM and Occult Metal as I call it there are moments of greatness but then it just goes into a pompus vibe that I use to think was just fucking silly (remember Bestial warlust) if you do then you get my point. I don't know if they are even serious about parts of this release. As Neige et Noirceur are very talented musicians that is clear . The damn album as a whole just seems very unfocused and I think this is were its losing me. Are you Raw or are you folk there are very few bands that can pull this off Graveland is one of them. Then out of left field there is an industrial element that comes over this. I don't know I think its time for me to say you decide on this as I think I'm over this release..
http://www.sepulchralproductions.com/

The Ocean-Anthropocentric-CD (Metal Blade)
More Awe inspired Progressive Extreme Metal. There are so many things going on with band. The ocean have a lot in common with Edge of Sanity ,Opeth but then they remind me of very un-metal band at time too. They have an uncanny way to sound like The Mars Volta. There is a strong love of bands like Kill Switch Engage and All that Remains which I know some feel are sell out now but to me still are very original sounding Extreme music bands.  The tempo and time changes on this records are jaw dropping there is almost a post hardcore element going on too. The more I dig into this there are flavors of many the more indie hardcore bands like Shudder to think and Jawbox as well.  I know this is not going to be for everyone but if you like complexity and thought provoking arrangements then The Ocean is second to none. The Grand Inquistor III sound like its straight out only the later Gathering Album still wth Anneke. There other moments I swear they are side band of Mastodon as some of the riff just have that feel. The to go a bit more obscure they have a very close kinship with a band called Giant Squid. I'm going to be listening to this a hell of a lot I can tell ya.

Sargeist- Let the Devil in-CD (Moribund Cult)
Really what do you need to know about Sargeist after all these releases and years. You have members of Horna and Behexen creating some of the greatest mid tempo cold and catchy black metal that has ever been made. There is a majesty feel to how this is created and the layers of sound and the craft that is put into the guitar tones, melodics and he brutal vocal and drumming assault this yet to be another gem in the crown that Moribund already holds from the best in the Blackened arts. A band like Sargeist is much like others I can think of Marduk or Dark Funeral . You either already love this band or will never give them a chance. With that I say if your a fan of Black metal with a melodic edge then this is a release not to miss.

11 AS IN ADVERSARIES Interview is up...

11 AS IN ADVERSARIE

1. This is clearly one of the most beautifully twisted Post/Avant Metal releases I've heard in while. You much have a strong love for Arcturus, And Oceans, Code, Fleurety and DHG just to name a few. Where did this mix of Indie, Jazz, Noise, Black Metal and Classic Thrash Come from

I've always listened to lots of different bands, not caring about what kind of labels they fit in but instead letting the emotions lead the way. You'd be surprised how little I listen to Extreme Metal, in fact my tastes are varied from Punk to Hardcore, from Blues to Rock from Jazz to Noise. The Mars Volta, Alice In Chains, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Integrity, Nirvana…

2. You are working with the Brilliant A.T.M.F. label how did you come to work with them?

It's always difficult to find the right place. I personally had the occasion in the past to collaborate with half a dozen of labels from different horizons and being signed on a major is not necessarily an asset. I'd rather work with dedicated people like A.T.M.F. who I know are 100% behind the record, than with a much bigger structure. With that in mind, we just did it the old fashion way: Sending some promos to a few labels. Eventually we caught some attention and went for the best deal.

3. Being a Duo there are many freedoms you have in studio and recording and arranging. Do you feel this help with a wonderful chaos that is created on “The Full Intrepid Experience of Light”?

At first I created the record on my own and there was a very annoying drum machine pulsing in the background. So I was looking for a way to improve that and got in touch with an awesome drummer from Italy who was willing to give it a try and beat the machine down. It was quite a challenge for both of us but eventually we got through and it was an honest achievement! I will always be favorable to being a duo because it's really a lot more stimulating and satisfying in the end.

4. Does 11 AS IN ADVERSARIES ever want to perform Live?

We have recruited live members in case opportunities would present themselves. We're all seriously involved in other projects but still could find the time to perform Live on the right occasion.

5. The sounds of many of the tracks have a very 90's Indie rock feel from labels like Touch and go, Amrep and C/Z label bands like Skin Yard, Surgery, Polvo and Rodan to name a few. Was this the other side of the musical spectrum you are coming from?

It's quite remarkable that you noticed it, especially Skin Yard. Can't get 'Ritual Room' out of my head! It sounds very much alike Nirvana's 'Bleach' which is one of my favorite album of all time. All these Indie Rock/Punk/Grunge bands from the 90's really made an impression on me, although some are better than others but this is definitely my style.

6. Is your current fan base made of non metal people or are they mostly the more open minded Metal crowd?

It's a bit too early to have a real idea about our fan base, but I'm guessing they could be from any horizon really, as long as they are looking for an alternative to all the shit we're being fed with.

7. The Cover art for “The Full Intrepid Experience of Light” is very interesting does it tell a story for the album or just something that ties into it?

The cover and entire artwork are literally home made. You can see my hand pressing a button of a machine I built myself, next to a peculiar grimoire and scratches of formulas. It's a concept album, meaning every single detail matters in order to fully appreciate the record. “The Full Intrepid Experience of Light” is an experiment, a special rite. I spent the night meditating and chanting, looking for the only truthful meaning of LIGHT as opposed to the false illusions provided by the Demiurge. Being as one with the essence of Lucifer, the bearer of the secret fire, and in accordance to his Will I was able to build the weapons of my own liberation! And so should you.

8. You worked with the main man behind Shining (Niklas). How did that come to be and are you happy with the outcome? It's by far the most metal track.

I've always admired Shining for how they dare to explore different territories, just like we are. I've been keeping in touch with Niklas for a while and the point was to collaborate together as two individuals fighting against limitations. It wasn't a desperate attempt to try to gain a couple of fans out of it and each time I listen to the song just proves me I made the right call. For sure “The Night Scalp Challenger” is a real badass song, progressive and intense.
9. I know this was going to be the title of new Glorior Belli's which both of you are part of  .So is there any different to the material going to be on new Glorior Belli album.

I guess the most obvious element that couldn't work in both projects is the voice, even though I sometimes also use the 'Punk' screams with Glorior Belli there's never been real singing for 40 minutes straight. Glorior Belli is being known for mixing Blues and Southern-Rock textures with the brutal, ominous vibe typical of Black Metal and I'd like to keep it that way now. It's always difficult to find your own style and sometimes you need to know where to stop experimenting, at least for a while or you just lose the spirit and essence of the band. This is why I decided to start 11AIA that would allow me to keep being innovative without altering the main project.

10.  Will 11 AS IN ADVERSARIES continue past this one release or is it more just a loose side project as I really hope to hear more its so original in todays sterile music scene?

Regardless of the circumstances that led to the creation of this side project, we consider 11 AIA as a real band, following its own path. The debut album is only the first stone of our temple!

11. What has been the feedback so far on the band that you have seen and heard?

We haven't been able to get a lot of feedback so far, as the record is not even officially out yet. I'm pretty confident that this record is going to kick some doors down and brainfuck the audience. No one can get in the way of the Black Light that spreads out.

12. Paris and France in General seem to be a hot bed for more experimental metal acts. Esp with Season of Mist being there? What are some of the bands in Paris that really interest or impress this duo currently?

I really don't think Season of Mist has anything to do with the birth of experimental bands. The French scene has been so productive over the years because it's made of great individuals willing to share their own twisted visions of art. It's just part of our challenging culture that always seems to be flirting with the edges of creation. I can't say I'm personally a huge fan of French bands, but if I really had to name a few it would be Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Year Of No Light, Celeste…

13. There is a very groove/  hypnotic catchy element to 11  AS IN ADVERSARIES. Was this a natural progression of was it done from the begin?

The composition process was quite fluent, I didn't have to worry about the result at all and just kept the ideas flowing in. I was literally the vessel of the Dark Ones, channeling incantations and forbidden words nights after nights until the monster was born. Everything inside “The Full Intrepid Experience of Light” is made out of spontaneity and genuineness!

14. You seem to just have a Myspace page do you feel this is all an indie band really needs to get the word out in 2010?

Not only MySpace but all sorts of social networks can be very useful when it comes to promotion. I think it would be quite silly to miss that opportunity, especially when you get the chance to communicate with the fans. We want them to be able to go deeper into our philosophy and beliefs.

15. Do you support the new digital media age for indie artists or do you feel its watering down the scene too much?

It's not about being supportive, it's about being smart and adapt to your surroundings. This new digital media age has brought upon us some comfort as well as discomfort. You can't really expect to earn money from underground music but on the other hand it's really easy to get the word out nowadays! So the lucrative aspect aside, it's quite a win for bands like 11AIA that are mostly looking to spread the poison in the Orthodox stream.

16. Any closing thoughts please place here.

Be fearful of what lies beyond 10!

Atheist Interview is up

Atheist

1. Its been many yrs since the last release.  How did Jupiter come to be?

Well a few parts divine intervention, and several parts hard work i guess..we just doing the reunion shows in 2006, and it went so well, that we continued for 4 years, and finally just decided to get in a room with one another and see what it felt like to make new music. We did so, and the rest is Jupiter!

2. Jupiter seems to be a much more aggressive and less prog/ jazz , Was the metal side reborn with Jupiter?

I think a particular reason for that is Steve Flynn's drumming of course. On Elements, it was Josh Greenbaum, who was a very jazzy player, and Flynn is super aggressive, so the riffs take on a new life form when we write together i think. Not to mention there was quite a bit of anger pent up for 2 decades.

3. How did you come to work with Season of Mist?

Michael Berberian (Pres of S.O.M.) has been a long time friend, and has pursued the band to do a new record, and quite honestly one of the main reasons that it actually happened. We needed special circumstances to sort of get it done and he was very supportive in that process. He has made some serious moves in the indy metal world in the last 2 years, and we felt that he was running a label that was taking a stab at the top, so we connected the dots with them in 2008

4. Your website is very impressive tell us a bit out it came to be http://www.atheistmusic.com/-

Thanks, we owe that to our webmaster Cory Dransfeldt, he has been a silent, invaluable tool in the reformation of our little information metal highway! We hope to add as many interactive features to it as we can. We really like to be available for fans to be able to talk to the band directly, and communicate to us. And also it's a great way to network worldwide, so that when we come to town..whatever town.We have friends everywhere. We met a Young metal head named Matei at Wacken 2006..he came all the way from Romania on a train like 14 hours..and had all of his stuff ready to be signed. We asked him to wait on the crowd side of the catwalk at Wacken, and we would be over as soon as we got a drink..but 90 min later i realized SHIT! we forgot that kid..he is waiting for us, so i walked back to the walkway and there he was waiting. We(the Whole band) took him w us out into the crowd and watched Motorhead..became friends, and when we played Romania, his Grandma made us a 6 course Traditional Romanian Meal at his house in Bucharest..it was AMAZING, and we had a great time, and i think he was pleased to have Atheist at his dinner table. We enjoyed the meal greatly! He remains a close friend to this day. This is why it's important to have a good, interactive website.

5. How have the live shows been after so many yrs away from the spotlight with Atheist?

Incredible! This was the most alarming aspect of coming back after all those years, we came back to fans that knew the music like we know it. That's a far cry from our past. i have never seen so many technical air guitarists and drummers...and bass players. Very inspiring! We are very excited to bring the songs of Jupiter to the stage..it's like our family of tunes has grown and it will be so refreshing to inject that into the live Atheist experience in 2011!

6. Is there a running theme for Jupiter ?

No, it's a variety of lyrical ideas that are separate to their own..life, evolution, anger, hypocrisy, law breaking popes.....i think we got it all covered! LOL

7. As its been well over a decade since Atheist has been making music . Whats the major difference you see in the Metal and Independent music scenes?

The demand from metal heads that the music..not just imagery matters! U can indeed have a great bot of imagery going on in your live presentation, but it's so very important that your band can play their collective asses off as well. There is also this amazing ability to go from David to Goliath in a quicker time with the viral aspect of the internet..we would have to send out cassette tapes back in the day, and it would sometimes take months to see your demo reviewed etc..these days it's instant. There are not many excuses to hind behind these days when it comes to not promoting your music as a young band. The ability to write a song at noon, record it by 4 pm, and send it to the other side of the globe by 5p.m and actually get feedback by 5:30..that's pretty impressive in terms of marketing I would say

8. Kelly is it hard not to play guitar with Atheist. Is there a chance you will be able to again?

another "myth" about me.. i play guitar each and every day, and never stopped, what I did do was stop playing on stage due to Carpal tunnel in my right hand. But as long as I am sitting down the pressure  on that nerve in my hand is not debilitating, but if I have to sing and play, it's just numb..so i constructed a good deal of the guitar stuff w jonathan and chris on Jupiter, i spent 8 months getting my chops us before starting to collect the riffs on tape that would be used on Jupiter. But this is important, because had it just been chris and jonathan, we would have had a harder time preserving the core sound of myself and flynn writing and constructing these weird tunes together. But it was a great collective effort as well. So please print boldly..I DO still play guitar :)

9.  Do the members of Atheist feel that digital downloads and bittorrents are causing a major issue with promotion and sales of Indie artists today? That's really not a feeling, it's a fact! i think the digital world has a great deal of positive aspects as well, but it's important that if you dl a free mp3 that you go out and buy the record. bands have to borrow money from Record companies in order to make these records we all enjoy. If you steal the music, the band can no longer pay the money back, essentially losing their record deal, and fading into obscurity. It seems music is one of the few medias assaulted by this practice.. and it's important to note that unlike software companies and writers..musicians have NO MONEY just art, so please consider that when stealing an entire record from a site offering it for free. Bands now have to make the package an important artistic statement to encourage the sale of the actual disc.

10. Atheist has had several line ups and styles identities with this line up with Atheist focus more on new material live or a good mix of the Jazzy prog and  Tech Metal  moments?

Our live set will contain songs from every record for sure, we have a wealth to choose from and we will most certainly play lots of old stuff and at least half the new album as well

11. Thanks for the time any closing thoughts here...

Thanks to each and everyone of you who have kept the name Atheist alive for 2 decades, and to allow us to now be stronger than ever in a landscape of brilliant extreme metal sonic art!. We will see you all out on tour, and we hope u will go buy the record on Nov 8th in europe and the 9th in the states Cheers!

Diskreet Interview is up...

DISKREET INTERVIEW

1. Being a very Tech Death Metal band from the USA. Do you find yourselves a bit out of the more gore and guttural Death scene. I will tell you I find you far more interesting..

Andy/Diskreet: As far as "scenes" go we've never identified ourselves with any one scene.  We just play and write what we enjoy and to the most extreme of our abilities.  We're all into a little bit of something different and when we collaborate we put our overall style collected from our influences together to create what is Diskreet.

2. There is a Melody and Sci Fi or maybe the better word is futurist sound to Diskreet was this done with thought about it or did it just come natural?

Andy/Diskreet:  I would just say that we are always trying to move forward and be better musicians and Malcolm helped create that sound a lot with his leads and solos along with his creative structuring.  We don't write things we aren't happy with and most of us enjoy death metal, metal, and music of all sorts for that matter, of the highest caliber.  At the same time we are still trying to make listener friendly music and not go too far with technicality or structure.

3. You're working with Seige of Amida/ Candlelight again how has the label been for you to work with.. Are you glad to be working with Candlelight as well?

Andy/Diskreet: Seige of Amida has done great for us in way of getting us published and distributed and bringing us over to Europe but keep in mind we were their first band and they have grown a lot and made way for their label a lot since our last release.  We have nothing but positive feelings toward them and are excited to release this new album.  Candlelight has done good for us in the press world but all in all this has been a self employed uphill battle so far.  Who knows what the future has to offer Diskreet but we could use all the help we can get.

4. What bands brought Diskreet to make music as you make now?

Andy/Diskreet: That's a tough one but I'll just list some bands I know we all agree on.  Necrophagist, Origin, Arsis, Decapitated, Nile, The Red Chord, Despised Icon, Decrepit Birth, Animosity, etc. etc. etc.   Its really hard to pin point certain bands because i think musicians become a collaboration of everything they've ever connected with musically and that is a subconscious thing that is hard to define.

5. Do you enjoy performing live or is the real magic the studio for a band like Diskreet?

Andy/Diskreet:  We love playing live.  We strive to play what we record and write and the way we connect with the fans on stage is more important than in a CD player.  But, what we record has also got to be of high caliber or no one would give a shit to come see our live show.

6. The more I listen to "Engage" the more things I hear there is a strong love of Bay Area thrash I hear in guitars esp solo would this be true or am I just hearing things?

Andy/Diskreet: We love us some Bay music on the drums and rhythm guitars but Malcolm's soloing is, to me, his own thing.  He is an amazing guitarist and composer of his solo's.  It goes back to people's collaboration of what they've loved, themselves, over the years.  Malcolm's solos have voice and are perfectly played to the songs they are placed in.  He brings them alive.

7. The vocals are brutal but still not low and garbled ( I mean this as a compliment..) Is it difficult to keep the lyrics clear and yet brutal like this?

Andy/Diskreet:  Babcock is a beast.  We are huge fans of his approach to vocals and that is why he is in the band.  He puts everything he's got into belting his lyrics out.  That comes from old brutal core bands i think; but its like when your pissed as fuck at someone and you're telling them to fuck off but musically. Haha!

8. What's your thoughts on the Current US Death metal scene?? are there new stand out bands for your or is Europe still holding the crown for Diskreet?

Dustin/Diskreet: I think there's a lot of exciting stuff coming out of both areas right now, you still have a lot of awesome classic staples out of our country touring like Suffo, Severed Savior, and the like, while there are still some up and comers we're actually all pretty excited for such as Fallujah and Vale of Pnath, and I'm personally happy to see bands like Devourment pop up on everyone's radar; but I feel that the US death metal scene more caters to the Deathcore sound at the moment, which is fine - people will like what they like, every band garnering attention has their own deserved uniqueness that stands them apart from everyone else. But with bands like Spawn of Possession, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Gorod, and so many others, it'd be ridiculous to ignore the incredible stuff going on in Europe.

9.  The artwork for Engage is crazy detailed tell us a bit about it and why was it chosen?

Andy/Diskreet: When we came up with the title of the album this is almost exactly the scene that popped into my head.  Engage the Mechanicality has a double meaning.  The E.P. was entitled Infernal Rise meaning "here we come."  This album means engage conformity and the way things are "supposed to be" and do it your way from the gut.  But it also means we introduced ourselves with the E.P. and now were ready to take on this beast of a music business and try to make it work for ourselves.

10. I ask all bands whats your thoughts on the current digital musical age do it help or hurt bands and why?

Dustin/Diskreet: It's a double edged sword in it's own way that ends up doing both, and I'm speaking more along lines of internet piracy. Without blabbing too much, it's a great thing that it's a great way of free promotion, plus you get your art out to that many more listeners, and as an artist, that's what you really want. But there is a numbers game too, and folks with the power to develop your careers don't care that 40,000 kids downloaded your album and gave raving comments about it, if you only sell 2,000 units - that's what they see, and you become high risk. I think there's a happy middle to be discovered, where bands see more from what they do, and labels stop seeing revenues tank - but I think the music industry has become so used to the way things are, that developing hypothesis' for the direction to take that industry is very risky. Overall, I think it can help everyone, bands, labels, and music lovers alike, once the correct new formula is developed.

11. You seem to let Myspace be the bands world to the internet to you feel that is the best way to expose the band to new listeners?

Dustin/Diskreet: Part of the digital music age equation seems to lie in utilizing social network sites to self-promote yourself on the internet. Bands I played in 10 years ago, I had to develop full on websites, that saw a limited amount of potential to gain exposure and spread our music to people who may, or may not, enjoy it. Fast forward that time to 2004 and beyond and you have myspace. Quite honestly, as far as the internet goes, I see ReverbNation becoming the new face of where to go for seeking out music, and seeing what's up with your favorite bands, it has a lot more content and options to offer more than Myspace, but with so much content, it becomes a little cluttered and looks more like a giant presskit than a place to promote your music. Myspace is still simple, and because it's free, it makes an ideal website. Purchase a domain for a year, re-direct it to your myspace and you have everything fans want from a band website: tour dates, music, videos, photos, bios, blog/news updates, and a way to communicate directly with you, and the coding is still ideal to develop a website that is unique for you and looks professional. Yes, I'm a nerd like that.

12. Thanks for the time any closing thoughts here.

Thanks!

PROPHECY PRODUCTIONS news: Antimatter / Nucleus Torn

Antimatter: "Alternative Matter" due out January 11th, 2011 in North America
Nucleus Torn: "Andromeda Awaiting" and "Travellers" due out January 11th, 2011 in North America

Antimatter: "Alternative Matter" due out January 11th, 2011 in North America

On January 11th, 2011, ten years after the recordings of their debut album "Saviour", Antimatter will release "Alternative Matter", a retrospective of another kind. This is not a standard best-of album, but a compilation of exclusively unreleased recordings and alternative versions from the archives of the band, compiled by
Antimatter mastermind Mick Moss with care and passion. "Alternative Matter" features demo and acoustic versions of well-known Antimatter songs, live recordings, remixes, and also new recordings which have been conceived especially for this compilation. And in their entirety all these songs tell a yet unknown Antimatter story.

After months of intense work on his anniversary compilation, Mick Moss himself is very pleased with its outcome: "The amazing thing about this compilation is that these pieces were set to tape in many different places during a period of over ten years, yet collected together they form a coherent and united new listening experience, a fascinating alternate history that sounds unlike any prior Antimatter album. I would love to be able to hear this collection in its entirety with fresh ears for the first time, but that’s now for the listener to do."

Nucleus Torn: "Andromeda Awaiting" and "Travellers" due out January 11th, 2011 in North America

On January 11th, 2011, two albums by Nucleus Torn will be released: the new studio album "Andromeda Awaiting" as well as the compilation of early works "Travellers".

"Andromeda Awaiting" provides the disillusioned, yet conciliatory completion of a conceptional trilogy that was startet with "Nihil" (2006) and "Knell" (2008). As on the two precursors, Nucleus Torn are creating a new sonic realm on "Andromeda Awaiting." This acoustic and ethereal production blends elements of Progressive Rock with influences from Early Music (Middle Ages, Renaissance) and Impressionism as well as Folk and Jazz.

"Travellers" comprises all Nucleus Torn releases from the times before their debut album "Nihil": the EP "Krähenkönigin," which was recorded in 1998 and eventually released in 2004, the originally self-produced mini CD "Silver" (2000), and the demo CD "Submission" (2002), which was only released as a CD-R back in the day. These early works are now to be presented to a larger audience for the first time. The compilation is topped off by "Leadless" and "Lurking," two previously unreleased songs from the sessions for their debut album "Nihil."

New Reviews 10/9/2010

DIMENTIANON- Collapse the void-CD (Paragon Records)

What we have here is some challenging Symphonic Black Death in a very Swedish overtone on how the tracks are arranged . Reminds me a lot of bands like mix of bands like Dark Funeral ,Edge of Sanity, Dissection all in a stew of melody, melancholy, doom, death and despair. Dimentianon are not from Sweden they are from NY so it makes it all the more interesting to review them. There are some amazing orchestral moments in the way Neoclassic artist present it. Dimentianon is mix of so many sounds and elements its hard to really tie them down as there are moments I swear they sound like Amorphis too. All I can say is with out a doubt this is a very exciting metal release with many avant elements. Well worth checking out..

Bison B.C.- Dark Ages-CD (Metal Blade Records)

Bison BC is very select mix of sound that aligned in the right fashion makes a band that will rip your face off with the riffage that is going on here. if  the most kick ass rocking elements of Clutch, Mastadon and Pantera were all put into a blender and then a heavy does of thrash was thrown in for good measure you would have what The Bison are offering and you know what . Hell YA !!! this kicks ass.  The catchy element to this is what makes it all the more interesting I swear I hear horns in this album too many I'm nuts.. Bison BC also love Neurosis that much is very clear and this album is just so balls out heavy in its approach how can you not just love it. Even the acoustic or more progressive moments are epic it the nature they are presented. Metal Blade has one hell of a band here and I need to hear their previous album now.. All hail the sound of DOOM!!!

11 AS IN ADVERSARIES- The Full Intrepid Experience of Light-CD (ATMF)

ATMF is a label that likes to confuse as much as inspire the listener to take your thought of what conventional music is then twist it 180 degree and then flip it the other way again. 11 AS IN ADVERSARIES reminds me of the 90's Noise/ Indie rock bands on labels like Amrep, Touch and Go then mix in Blues and Avant Metal for something that is not really heard by many listeners .  This band is really bizarre yet really really good. Damn this band is doing what  Ulver did to me after hearing the William Blake's Themes  double CD. There making me rethink how music is really created.  I don't Know if I'm going to be able to listen to much beyond this for a few days as I've totally fallen in love with this release. It really has it all Avant, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Noise, Metal, Prog and Punk elements through out this  album.  for fans of Manes, Devin Townsend, Code and Bogus Blimp.. Must Listen I tell you now...

THE SEQUENCE OF PRIME-Virion-CD (Self Releases)

So what we have here is Man and Machine clashing wonderfully on a industrial metallic journey. I'm heard this kind of hatred before but never really with these kind of elements if you can imagine for a moment Voivod, Fear Factory, Neubaten, NIN and Kreator all mix into a fist in the face of convention. The vocals are just noisy distorted and yelled at while the guitars are those of a Thrash metal band sped up and the drums and synths and backing music sounds like an industrial band that needs to add the noise and speed to it as if they played to slow they may just explode. There is a very futuristic element to all of this on Virion and it adds to the over all beauty and disgust to a band like this. The Sequence of prime is one pissed off project and I really want to see where this goes we need more...

FURZE- REAPER SUBCONSCIOUS GUIDE-CD (Agonia Records)

So what if Doom, Lofi Black metal and just general weirdness was mixed all together is a band that was on a mission to blur the lines of art and aural instruction. Well then you would get a band called Furze . This has to be one of the oddest Black metal projects I have ever heard. The best way I can even begin to explain Furze would be what if Early Genesis was a Black metal band and feel in love with Black Sabbath. Yes I know I'm thinking the same the thing WTF???. To be honest this is just want this band or better one man force sound like. Agonia is a label that is very hit or miss with me and this time out Furze is a Major Hit for this reviewer..
