Falls of Rauros Interview is up

<br />Falls of Rauros

<br />Falls of Rauros

http://fallsofrauros.blogspot.com/

1. For those that have never heard your Heathen, Ritualistic Black metal sounds before tell us how Falls of Rauros came to be?

We formed, and I use that term loosely, in 2005 as a two-piece. Things have since changed and there's now four of us contributing to the project. It didn't really feel (or be treated) like a "band" until some time in 2007, after all the "Into the Archaic" material. Since then we've begun to play live shows, although not a whole lot of them. Preferably without stages, because you know how that is..

2. With " The light that dwells in rotten wood" this is your 3rd full length our does your Self released Debut and 2nd album on Morbid Winter differ in sound and concept?

Though the sound has "improved" a bit since "Hail Wind and Hewn Oak" we still recorded the album ourselves, at our practice space. Our friend Austin Lunn recorded (and performed, mind you) all of the kit drums on this record at his home in Kentucky. More effort was put in to achieve a fuller sound, but we're still far from professional engineers. The concept of the record is pretty similar to previous material, though it's a bit more focused. And outward.

3. Your working with Bindrune a real growing label in a music scene that seems to faltering with many other labels. How did you come to work with them and End you Collab with Morbid Winter?

I had been well aware of Bindrune for years, enjoying every release I got a chance to hear. As far as I know, when Jack Hannert (vocalist of Seidr) moved to Traverse City he and Austin befriended Marty and at some point gave him the heads up that we were recording new material. It just sort of happened. I think Bindrune perfectly embodies and represents what we like to see going on in underground metal. Morbid Winter Records did a wonderful job with our last release and really got the album around. And there's no shortage of quality music on that label. A nod to you, sir.

4. What is a live show for Falls of Rauros like ? I would think its a very primal and powerful event with a very direct purpose is that correct?

We certainly hope a live performance would be in some way powerful, but that would depend on who is watching/listening. We don't do very much in the way of theatrics and we sound rather raw I think. That mostly stems from bare bones sound checking, and stripping down the music to be played by a quartet. If we can communicate a feeling or maybe an idea to someone at a performance that's great, wonderful even. Sometimes the whole room is drunk and that's good and well also.

5. What is the Theme or Ideals on " The light that dwells in rotten wood" . I can hear the Pagan Atmospheric Blackened metal there are very similar elements to Wolves in the throne room to this writer am I correct?

All the lyrics to the album will actually be included this time around. It's not a concept album or anything, but there is a sort of vague theme that runs throughout. I honestly don't feel comfortable explaining the meaning behind it, as that's always been part of the allure of black metal for me. Perhaps "Not one of us was born for this, yet who among you seek the pyre that's burning in the distance?" is a decent example.

Do you mean we are lyrically/thematically similar to Wolves in the Throne Room? I suppose there are similarities overall, but I think we both have a very different approach and (I hesitate to say) attitude to the lyrics. I really don't like describing our lyrics or themes very much, and even less when it comes to other bands. I feel I have no business doing so.

6.Are you fans of the digital music age or do you feel it hurts the underground music ethic?

At this point I can't really afford records, so I feel a bit disconnected in that regard. We've always been very forward about wanting people to download our music, simply so anyone who wants to hear it can hear it. We obviously encourage buying a physical copy if that's what you like to do, and you can afford it. Maybe you don't have space for records, you know?

7. Will there be any videos or a DVD as your music would fit the video format very well I think?

Honestly, I can hardly stomach watching us play on tape and I don't think I'm the only one in the band who feels that way. So for our sake, there are no plans for a dvd as of now. Who knows down the road, but nothing to speak of yet.

8. If someone was to ask the members of Falls of Rauros why you create the style of music you do . What would you tell them?

Imagining if someone asked me face to face, on the spot, I'd probably just change the subject or skate around the question. I'd say creating music has the potential, once in every while, to be very fulfilling. This applies to making any kind of music, though. And many other things as well.

9.Being a for no better term a Post Black metal band ( where you mix ambient, experimental and ethereal elements to your music) in North America is it hard to get the promotion or shows to edge the band to a higher level or is that just not important?

In Maine it is certainly difficult to get promotion, though we do play often enough in the area. The shows are usually quite small, and that's preferable. Portland is a small town really, but just enough people care to create something very worthwhile here. As far as in North America, and elsewhere, I don't even really know what goes in to promotion any more. I feel like the internet is where all of it happens. Obviously there are the printed magazines, but "word of mouth" throughout the internet seems to be the major source of promotion for most bands. As you suggested, it's not very important actually.

10. Is Nature and the Old world Heathen ways just a lost art and lifestyle to just a select few of us now or do you see the old ways coming back in a major way?

While I certainly would like to see it come back in a major way, I don't know if that's the case quite yet. There is a pretty widespread "back to basics" mentality right now, but unfortunately it's also fashionable at the moment. I don't see too much evidence of a major shift in the way people live in and with the world, outside of counterculture. The mainstream "green" movement's facade is paper-thin; just look at these supposed "green" versions of unnecessary products on the shelves of every big box store the world around. It's an uphill battle regardless.

11. The Band is from Maine a very isolated area for music and bands do you feel that has help in creating a more original output for the band?

There are quite a few bands/artists from Maine, and they're especially concentrated in the Portland area. While I wouldn't say there's a lot of it, there is without question some great music from around here. One thing can be said about Maine though, and that's that the music is not what you should be paying attention to. It's an unbelievably beautiful place; you could easily spend your whole life exploring a rather small region of this area. But don't all move here and ruin it, please.

12. Thank you for the time and any closing thoughts here

We appreciate your interest, and hope everybody is well.

Falloch- Where Distant Spirits Remain-CD (Candlelight Records)

I will be honest hearing this on Candlelight its a bit shocking as they normally don't go for the ethereal Post metal sound of bands like Agalloch, Alcest, Green Carnation or Anathema as this is were Falloch lie with me . This is something you would expect to be wonderfully present by The End Records, Profound Lore, Avantgarde or Prophecy Production and given to a fan base that will always love this style. Its very delicate balance this band. The mix Viking/Folk Metal with Post rock all with huge Progressive music heart on their sleeves. I swear if you could mix Falkenbach, Porcupine Tree and Katatonia into one band you would have this complete. I'm am just stunned by the majesty of this release and how boundary defying bands are becoming in 2011. The catchy elements that are just heart stopping with the full on massive full on metal sound that comes all in the same song is just well World class!!!! Love the Acoustic's mixed with the heavy rock and heavy string and organ work going on here with a drummer that is clearly from a none rock background to have all these amazing off tempo and time movements. Falloch thank you for making my evening .

ABHOR-Ab Luna Lucenti, Ab Noctua Protecti- CD (Moribund Cult)

Italian Ambient/ Ethereal Black metal full of melody, synths and many other proggish and jazzy elements all mix with a very old world raw Black metal sound that reminds me of early polish and german black metal . There is a chilling effect going on with this music its more ritualistic and invocation in nature then of a heathen background. It almost like he took 70's indie soundtrack music to horror and scifi and mixed it with a Black metal sound very similar to bands like Manes, Abyorm and Arcturus.. I guess the tag avant could be used but its so band twisted in the presentation of how ABHOR present there music. It's almost like the want to be a 70's Prog band but the singer has fallen in love with the Ideal and visions of what old school black metal from Northern Europe was all about. I swear I hear elements of King Crimson, Genesis, When and even Goblin and Black Widow... Really liking this album as its so different and a refreshing change from either the full on symphonic or grim Black metal you get most of the time a few label get this inventive with bands they sign Code666, Ajna Offensive, ATMF etc. Moribund keeps on impressing and I can not ask for more..

LARRNAKH- Like the silken shrouds of loneliness-CD (Epidemie Records)

I swear to you all this is the 2nd coming of Blood Axis with a huge mix of Spirtual Front going on here . The clearly have there passion coming from older bands like Changes and Boyd Rice as well. I swear at times this man sounds just like Michael Moynihan. There are flowing String, Acoustic guitars, Simple powerful percussion and just that old world heathen element in the arrangements that you only here in the best and most melodic of this bands. I think I even hear a xylophone going on here. The vocals are more is a poetic singing manner then anything else they are so powerful for this martial sounding project. Larrnakh go into the martial industrial side as well and then have a very similar vibe to bands like Sophia, Arditi but it is much more subtle in creation. I'm sure what else to say if your fan of the Athanor, Cold Spring, Old Europa Cafe and Tesco world of these sound then there is no way to pass up a release like this . Stellar , Passionate and so well done.

Kriegsfall U- 3rd album- CD (Epidemie Records)

I know many are visionaries of the Martial Neo Folk scene . I was part of it for over 8 yrs putting many releases out under the moniker As All Die. This reminds me of what Nordvargr/ Folkstorm, Propergol, Von Thronstahl and In Slaughter Natives have been creating over the year mixed all together in a wonderful blend of loops, samples, war time themes, martial/Neo folk industrial elements. It feels like the 90's all over again . Neo classical movements with harsh power electronic. Its want NON wanted all along . Boyd Rice and Albin of Der Blutharsch would be so proud of a project like Kriegsfall - U. Mixing the 1910- 1940's music elements with harsh electronics just seems to work well. There is a chaos that is just beautiful here. This would be an anthem for the next industrial revolution my friends. The passion that Kriegsfall- U presents is all that is needs. I would say if you miss true martial industrial music you need to look no further. There is so much going on here with female sung vocals, spoke words pieces, Hugely distorted scream and chanting vocals all over that noise, neo folk and industrial backdrop.. Just Stunning a must listen....

Unexpect Interview
ANSWERED BY: CHAOTH

1. Its been a 4 yrs of silence for Unexpect.. What has been going on since working with The End??

Well, actually, it's been 5 years of long, long silence since In a Flesh Aquarium that came out in 2006. Now, that silence was actually very loud for us at times. After releasing the aquarium of flesh we played a bit all over the place. Touring got a slow start and we weren't fully committed to life on the road until 2008 where we were gone for about 6 months off of the year in total. 2008 was a great year for us. Then in the winter of 2008-2009 we wrote FABLES OF THE SLEEPLESS EMPIRE and started the recording in the summer of 09 and then the mighty PROGRESSIVE NATION TOUR with Dream Theater and Opeth that changed our lives forever. We saw things my friend....... we saw things..... things I cannot speak. And well, I can't believe it's been that long. The album was recorded in 2009 but weren't released before 2011. Where did that time go ? Sometimes I feel like I don't even know.

2. If I may asked why are you not working with The End records any more they seemed to push the band in 2006/07 as a priority?

We really appreciate the window that they gave us and the opportunity to enter the USA territory and get us ''in-the-scene'' if you may but we just wanted to do things our way. Not that they wanted to control, not at all but, I guess we figured that we wanted to do everything ourselves so that this way we know exactly what is happening with everything. The idea of going independant has been there for a while and we wanted to take this album ourselves and see what we could accomplish and we've always been kind of control freaks if I may. :) In good ways of course. It just feels good sometimes to be ... it's easy to get lost and not see the point when you have a label and that you never see any cent coming your way besides loans that you repay for years to the label. Money is clearly not the reason we are in this business but it is also important for the health of the band and that is one good aspect of independance. Seeing all the transactions and knowing exactly what is going on is very rewarding.

3, The new album "Fables" seems to experiment more in the avant, prog and post metal genres with caberet and jazz music too. While being more dynamic its seems so much more focused.. How did this album come about?

With IAFA we were more into over-orchestrating everything and, as we never toured extensively before the recording of this album, we were maybe more studio-freaks and never really thought about how we would play that stuff live. But apparently we did..... and did we.... And then some years of experience later and a couple hundred shows later we got better as a band and writting this kind of ''focused'' music, as you say, just came naturally. After going at the very limit of our imagination to create the orchestration of IAFA, it seemed like the craziest thing to do to play some power chords, some choruses and some simple lines. So we added that to the mix and played with it to the best of our capability. I would say it's the best relation between every musicians we've ever had for this record. It's really a whole of 7 musicians (at the time) each giving the perfect element and it all came to life beautifully. Every body was involved and everybody gave it it's colour and that to me is beautiful. If you're interested in the specifics, there is the credits in the booklet that I think are really well done and very representative of each composers and what they brought to the table.

4. Being a fully independent band without label .. What issues do you see in 2011? Do you need a label or just good distro and promotion?

Obviously it's not easy to be all indie. We have the chance to have some support from FACTOR here in Canada for some financial issues and we work with promotional agencies to get the word accross about FABLES.

5. How do you see Social media, webzine and internet radio ? Is this the new underground for 21st century?

Oh absolutely. Paper editions and ''real'' radio stations are still very important even essential but the web is where you always end up in the end. That's where it's all laid out and ready and pretty and thorough. Basically, the radio and the papers and mags will get you on the web in the end so, it's important to have both. I think we got pretty savy with the web aspect of it over the years and we're confident about the job we are doing. Besides, if you can make a video with a cute kitten, you might have way more publicity than you've ever dreamed. Type in: Tiny Hat Audition..... it's worth it.....

6. Are you seeing Digital music as a money making arena or is selling music becoming a passing thing? ( I almost see bands more living on DVD's, Shirts, Touring and Video Games like rock band)..

Digital is a great way to sell music, I just wish it was more commonly used. We are still starting in that Indie project and are no expert to review the world of music sales with an all knowing voice but digital certainly have some great convenience to it. For a band there is no manufacturing fee of course as there is no physical product and it is also very easily available for the fans.

In my mind Touring is the best publicity (if it's well done of course) because everything else comes with it. If you tour, you WILL sell shirts and CDs and get the word out and get some traffic on the web and the wheel will spin. And I must admit Rock Band is definetely on our to do list. More to come.

7. Is there a running theme on the adventurous new album " Fables"?

There is not overall theme I must say. The album was not meant to be a concept album that was supposed to be taken as a whole. I love that it became that as it all took life in this package and became FABLES OF THE SLEEPLESS EMPIRE. That title is actually more of a unifying force bringing all the songs together like a story book than a concept. Topics are as varied as the crowd in a Mike Patton concert... From social criticism to extraterrestrial philosophy to zombie love and much more... enjoy.

8. Will Unexpect be touring the USA at all I saw you yrs back with Gathering and Novembers Doom . You were very ahead of your time soundwise then. Your very powerful live to stay the least...

I personally wish more than anything that we sail the great interstates again and I'm sure it will happen in 2012. Nothing booked officially but, YES, I can assure you we'll be back. Hopefully we'll still be ahead of our time when we get there.... we don't like to get lost in the crowd and to be unnoticed.

9.Will there be a live DVD or Studio one? You music would make great soundtrack to film, theater or even circus...

All projects for now. Working on a video as well. I would love to have our music in a movie... if you see Guillermo del Toro around... give him my card...

10. I know you have had some lineup changes . Has this effected the sound of the band at all or just expanded it?

Borboen is very present on that record and he really is bringing a lot in terms of sound and orchestration. Very easy to work with him and I love what he brings to the table. It only expanded the sound possibilities. We lost Exod at the end of 2009 but he was there the whole time of the composing and recording of FOTSE and brought so much to the final result to. The opening track Unsolved of a Distorted Guest was actually his composition that we all orchestrated as a band. Lovely. Lovely.

11. If you were asked as a band what would you say Unexpect sounds like and why?

The troubled mind of ED-209. Because I love kung-fu.

12. What is the one thing you would tell new bands or bands trying to do it without labels in 2011? Any strong words of advice?

Drink rum.

13. The mix of Male and Female vocals , strings, synths with a more prog metal band element is very expressive . Who are your influences. I hear bands like Arcturus, Bogus Blimp, Devin Townsend and Within Temptation to name a few (are these some at all?)

Well, for one, we are not trying to emulate a band or a style that is prog or that is .... we are only combining all the music we listen to in a pot and make it Unexpect. For example, if you listen to strait up metal AND classical music, you're gonna end up playing melodic metal even if you never listened to a melodic metal band in your life. It's just the logic result of the equation. Now it's the same thing for us. We are not trying to sound like anything specific... we are not even trying to write prog music.. it's just what comes from our personnal influences through our voices. I do know Arcturus was a very early influence of the band more around the end of the 90's I guess. Never heard of Bogus Blimp.

Basically, everybody in the band would have a different answer for the music they love and the colours that they want to bring to the band. My personnal favorite would be Radiohead, Dillinger Escape Plan, Daughters (RIP), Venetian Snares, early Mars Volta, EfterKlang, and so much more I can't even think of it... and you can hear it in the music at times. A bit like trying to find the pieces of a pop tarts in a puddle of puke... oh... oh...that's a piece.... oh, I think that's one.... tha....... that's a brocolli but.... ohhhh here's another one...

14.THe Cover are for " Fables" is unique to say the least ? were did it come from and how does it play into the songs on the album?

The artwork is from spanish artist Mario Sanchez. We struggled a bit to find something that would fit the music and that would define this effort but I think that it does just that. I love the simplicity and purity of it and the fact that it is everything but metal.

15. Your website is brilliant and its so nice to see a band that cares to have a proper one and not just live off Facebook or Myspace..

Darth Vader.

16. Thank you for your time any closing thoughts here

Alex Collier will be vindicated.

Thank you again

Trials Interview is up

Trials, version 2. Photo by Aryeh Goldsmith. www.flickr.com/photos/metalaryeh/ in My Photos by

www.facebook.com/TrialsMusic

1. For Those very new to Trials tell us how the band came to be and created its Thrash, Power , Melodic Death metal mix came from?

The band started when Mark and Sasha started jamming the first few songs together. We aren't very heavily influenced by power metal, but Mark and Sasha definitely grew up listening to thrash and death metal/melodic death metal. Usha (our bass player) had been in bands with the guys before, and was a natural fit. I had basically been living in New York playing with another band, and was ready to start a new life, and the quality music and awesomeness of the city of Chicago compelled me to move here and join the band.
2. The Band being from Chicago that is a major metal home for bands like Trouble, Macabre,Broken Hope,Pelican and Nov Doom just to name a few Where do you see Trials fits in the Extreme music scene of this City?

I don't think we fit in very well at all, hahaha. The real popular bands here right now are Nachmystium, Indian, etc (a.k.a. slower, sludgier stuff than us)...while they're great bands, we are just nothing like that. I think that actually fires us up a bit and motivates us, but yeah, I personally think we're totally unlike the big bands that make up the Chicago extreme metal scene right now.
3. Your album reminds me a mix of Pantera, Machine Head and Inflames with way it all intertwines how did this Thrash meets Prog Death Metal style come to be?

None of us listen to much In Flames, but I agree a bit with the first two bands you mentioned. We don't set out to "copy" or be like anybody, but I think we share similar influences to Pantera and Machine Head when those guys were writing their classics. We share a "no fucking bullshit" quality with those bands, and we definitely have a total disregard for writing easy-listening music or shit that will sell well. That's just not how we roll. We write what we like, we try to be as heavy as we possibly can, and I think we have that in common with those bands.

4. You self released " Witness to the Downfall" do you feel as a band in 2011 you don't need a label just good promotion and distro?

We're self-releasing out of necessity. We've talked to a bunch of labels, we've weighed all the options, and this makes the most sense for us. No one makes money playing metal anymore, unless you have an established, international fanbase (which we, and most new bands, don't). And even that really doesn't guarantee anything. We want to write and record the songs as we envision them, play them live when we want to play them, and keep our homes and our jobs, which frankly are things not promised when you sign to a label. Obviously, if we found the right deal with the right label, we'd be open to it. But that hasn't happened yet.
5. Your working with Clawhammer PR they are a powerful PR force how is the feedback and press so far in a very DIY fashion for Trials?

We've gotten a lot of positive AND negative feedback. I think thats a good sign. Clawhammer has been good to us.
6. Do you prefer to go into Studio or is the Live side the true love of Trials?

I personally am more of a studio guy. I like albums with multiple layers of guitars and vocals; I like when there are tons of details that you don't notice until you listen to the album over and over again. I like spending time recording and tweaking until everything is perfect. I think "Witness" has that. We love playing live shows, but thats my personal preference.

7. Is there a running theme to " Witness to the Downfall" ?
Not particularly.

8. I read Sasha of Nov Doom was the drummer on the album how did that work as it seems he has rejoined Nov Doom again?

Sasha was our full-time drummer, decided to join Novembers Doom again, and decided that was just more of a priority. They do more live stuff (especially European festivals) than we do, so that made more sense for him. We kept his drum tracks, because they absolutely fit what we were doing at the time, but Adam Kopecky is Trials' full-time, permanent drummer now, and he's fucking awesome.

9. Whats Trials thoughts on the Digital Age ( Myspace, Facebook, Sat Radio, Webzines, Mp3s) do you which there was less digital and more old school print zines and Physical releases or is this the new Underground ?

The digital age enables new bands so much these days, but it also cripples them under the old record label business model. We love the extra exposure, we love the way things are, and we hope someone figures out a way to monetize it, hahahah.

10. If there is one label that you would or could work with who would it be ... Or is that not the goal or direction for Trials?

We aren't trying to make the big bucks. If the right label deal comes along, we'll sign it. Otherwise we'll keep writing, recording, and playing live as we have these past few years.

11. Will the band be touring or just more staying regional at this time? From You Tube your shows look intense...

We're going to stay regional for the time being. We love playing live, we love just playing as loud as possible and freaking people out, but its tough these days to take an act like that cross-country. We're staying local, playing shows in the midwest to people who care about us.

12. I don't see an official Trials website are Facebook, LastFM, SoundCloud and Myspace the best way for bands in 2011?

We may set up an official page eventually, but there are so many social media sites right now that its not really necessary.
13. Where do you see the direction of sound heading for future Trials releases?

We have most of our second album written already. We're striving to be more unique, more thought-provoking, heavier, faster, slower, and just better. The new stuff is a totally different animal from our old stuff, but it's clearly still Trials.

14. Any closing thoughts place here thank you again for the time...

I want to thank you guys for interviewing us, and for giving us exposure. The internet is where all the promotion is these days, and we're trying to capitalize on that as much as we can. I think we write great music, and we just want to provide solid metal to as many people as we can. That's all we want. You're doing us, and metal fans, a favor by doing this, and we thank you for that. And if you like solid, straight-up metal, check out our album, "Witness To The Downfall", when its released August 1st. It'll be available on a multitude of mediums.

New Reviews 7/16/2011

Unexpect-Fables of sleepless empire-CD (Self Released)

I truly was wondering what had happen to this very unique and interesting ExperiMETAL band. As they were amazing when I saw them live with Gathering and Nov Doom many yrs back. Well looks like there partnership with The End is over and they have self released an album even better then the last. They have Prog, Avant, Death Metal, Indie Rock, Jazz, Post Rock and circus music elements going on all at the same time. The Theatrical female vocals with the clean and growled male vocals, strings, synths, pianos, adventurous guitars, bass and drums its just jaw dropping . If your fans of Arcturus, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Within Temptation, Made out of Babies, Bogus Blimp and Peccatum you just get the tip of the iceberg. So support this force to be reckoned with as they are truly independent now and if Unexpect don't win a Grammy for this release its a crime. As they are as groundbreaking as Queen, Beachboy's Beatles and Yes were and are for there times. This is a must listen as no mortal can hear all that is going on with this release on just one sitting. Their style, arrangements and complexity alone in one song is more then most albums. Just stellar a mandatory album for 2011...

Crone- Endless Midnight-CD (Translation Loss)

So with the end of Isis the members are moving on to new creation and Jeff (Bassist of Isis) is now given us Crone. It has a huge love of Earth more current sound and Americana music from what I hear. Endless Midnight has the Southern lazy post rock sound with the slide guitars, mountains of verb, very simple but perfect percussion and those waves of slow and ebbing bass line mixed with a spaghetti western soundtrack. Thank you Mr Eastwood for this entire genre . There are ties to the mellow sides of Mogwai and Silver Mt Zion. Crone is brilliant sound journey that grew with each track. There are elements of House of low culture and Lotus Eaters here which I think Jeff help on with Aaron of Isis as well. I would also say Justin Brodrick Final is a strong influence here. So many layers and cinematic tones going around every corner . Crone is a must listen for fans of the Post Rock style. I feel richer for just hearing it. I shouldn't be surprised as James Plotkin mastered it and his ear is 2nd to none.

Faces of Bayon- Heart of the fire-CD ( Ragnarok Records)

So a band from State of MA on a label from the same state with members from the Bands ( Warhorse and Twelfth of Never) what do you think the band is going to sound like maybe a Prog Proto Doom metal band.. Well Surprise , surprise that is 1000% what it sound like . If Black Sabbath and Hawkwind put a band together you would have the band I'm listening to right now . I swear this could have been recorded in 1977 and you would believe it was just unearthed.. Some one has major love of the Trippy and Stoner as you can hear the Warhorse sound screaming through out this . Faces of Bayon are just too retro for me to love. Though they do have moments were they are almost winner me over then just goes into the stoner groove I really can not take . Oh well you win some and some you just grow neutral on ...

Bringer of Disease- Gospel of Pestilence-CDep (Translation Loss)

Avant raw Black metal assault from members of Mouth of the Architect and Acheron . If your into Black metal like Watain, Deathspell Omega, Nightbringer, Weapon, Xasthur etc. You get the idea this is full of hate, ritualistic hymns, blistering power and the mental illness to put it all together. There are punk elements in Bringer of Disease like all good releases in this genre and the noise element is strong and good proggish rhythm section. Bringer of Disease is about making music unsettling and dark and wins on both levels. The vocals are just like a dagger to your jugular and it makes it all the better. The blasts are so tight you would swear this is a drum machine but it clearly is not. Black metal with not regards for others .Bringer of Disease is all about what they want and it what you need.. Get this..

Annex Theory- Beneath the skin- CDep (Pivotal Rockordings)

Melodic Tech Deathcore is what is going on here and with just 4 songs they seem to be about structure and substance not tracks. It reminds me of bands like Gojira, Meshuggah , Gorguts, Its has many prog elements like Pain of Salavation and Dream Theater going on to but its just such an odd mix and with the off the wall time stamps going on . This will throw off many in what its going at time they sound as bizzare as " I wrestled a Bear once". Its like this band loves Mike Patton ,Atheist, Death and Meshuggah all at once. Annex Theory is off the wall and really sound like no one else and every once else all at the same time. Controlled Chaos is what you have and I need more. Please next time more then 4 damn tracks..

Sarabante- Remnants-CD (Southern Lord)

Wow Post Crustcore is what we have here and a sick job they do indeed. Think of Deadguy, Born Against, Agnostic Front and early Sick of it All all mixed with elements of Rorschach, Black Army Jacket & Dead and Gone etc. There are moments of Early Neurosis too but just in the guitar sounds. This is far more that dirty filthy Crust sound you got from San Fran and Nyc in late 90's mixed with full on Hardcore riffing. This really makes me want to circle pit . Someone in this band better have matted Dreds and and beard to the chest lol.. There is a power and fury to Sarabante you don't get unless its this style of music. I'm sure it highly social and political in nature and the songs are so thought out in arrangements for this style and certain parts are almost anthemic in nature. Southern lord is really going to were Prank, Slam a ham, Revelation, Victory , Bovine and Amrep were at pulling all these great sounds out of the grave limited releases or not . Amazing Amazing music thank you..

Hekate Interview is up

HEKATE

http://www.hekate.info/

1.In an age where Neofolk, Ethereal Symphonic and Heathen sounds are losing ground were does a band like Hekate get there refreshing style and sound?

Jörg?

At the risk of sounding arrogant now, i must tell you , it comes from within......We have some longterm inspiring idols of course, but mostly we listen to the music in our heads to find Hekates own style and sound.

2. To this listener and writer Hekate take elements from bands like Blood Axis, Puissance, Dead can dance, Of the wand and moon and Spiritual Front and really make it your own. Do you feel epic acoustic ballad are a lost art form?

Axel: I started with Hekate as an experimental atonal project in the early 90ies. I

first played at universities and art schools on exhibitions. Hekate connects various character properties, which we work out over the years. But the most important aspect is that Hekate belonged to many cultures, like the Romans, the Greek, Asia Minor…It symbolises the power of an archaic culture and stands for the old way. First we were an experimental group. We were influenced by industrial bands from the 80ies like Einstürzende Neubauten and SPK, but also dark wave bands like Joy Division, Devo, David Bowie, Klaus Nomi, Test Dept. But our influence goes from classical Folk to groups like Current 93, Death in June to our favourite Band Dead can Dance. We also like Moby, Massive Attack, Delirium and other Ambient Bands. During the last years we became interested in European history, old songs and legends. Furthermore we became more self-confident and found our own style. The main thing of the music are the percussions, connected with old instruments and melody lines and actually with modern clichés like electric ambient sounds. We approach the most of our songs from ideas we get from reading books, visiting European landscapes or by telling myths from friends. We choose most themes for songs by our instinct not for special reasons. I must tell you , the most bands like Puissance, Blood Axis I never listen but it could be interesting to hear what kind of music they do.

3. Love the mix of Male and Female voices with the bombastic percussion and delicate musical waves. How do you create such in the studio and is it hard to create in a live setting or do you not even try to recreate the albums live?

Jörg: Some of the new pieces were actually created in the rehearsal room and were performed live before we recorded them for the album. Hekate is always keen to perform the music in front of an audience, so this is something we work on a lot and the latest incarnation of Hekate musicanwise, has so many musical possibilitys . However a few of the new pieces might not be performed live because they feel like studiotracks to us.

4. Die Welt der dunklen Gärten seems to be well produced something seems to be missing in this scene a lot was that a major focus on the release?

Jörg: Thank you for the flowers......The production of the album was as much a major focus like the songwriting was and the final mix of the material was done by Patrick Damiani who understood the music instantly

what a major case of luck for us........but the production itself when it came to decicions was done by Hekate .

5.Tell us about the artwork for Die Welt der dunklen Gärten how does it interplay with the album themes and musical output?

Axel: That is an interesting question. First of all I really love “Fidus” , Fidus was a student of Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach. “Per aspera ad astra” was painted by the both of them. We live close to the birth place from Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach and in Hadamar is a small museum with many original paintings from Diefenbach. I saw the whole “Per aspera ad astra” (62m). The picture is so incredibly words cannot explain what I felt when I saw the painting. Yes I am very fascinated about the live and the person Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, he was a truly searching person in his whole live. The images in my mind are really different, that has something to do about the story behind the CD. Sometimes I don´t like to listen my one music. The images and feelings will be to strong for me. But I will tell you the concept: First of all the meaning of “Garden” in the context of our CD is that the world of dark gardens is a place for our dreams, rush thoughts, unfulfilled wishes. A place between our real world and the world in our inner mind. The world when you start fall asleep, a metaphor for your own mind journey. I think that the “Garden” is a place that man creates. That means that the image of a garden does differ sufficiently from the model. Our great mother nature has nothing to do with our idea of Nature and Gardening. We need Nature. Nature doesn’t need us ever. It is a whole concept. It has something to do with my "tipping points" in our Live. The other “Hekate” releases live through their strong concepts but “Die Welt der dunklen Gärten” has much more a personal share. Farewell, sorrow, replacement and remembrance this will be the recurrent theme. And the painting of Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach “Per aspera ad astra” is a fragment to the hole concept.

6.Are the Members of Hekate fans of the modern digital age or as it gone to far now in 2011?

Dirk: The age of digital is blessing and curse at the same time. Without the possibilitys of the internet we wound not nearly reach as many people with our music. as we do now , not to mention this interview. But it is important to create a sanctuary far away from all the digital media to get in contact with nature and with oneself. So i recommend to take a rest from internet, tv, mobile and computers regulary.

7.Hekate reminds me a lot of what the heyday of CMI, Tesco and Cold Spring were all about . The Dark Ambient. Post Industrial and Neoclassic world had a moment in the late 90's early 00's were they seems unstoppable is this what your giving to the world once more?

Susi: We don’t want to "resurrect" this style of music, although we love it! No, here you can see typical influences.

Our intention is to tell stories, placed into atmospheric music.

8.What are the members of Hekate listening to as of late? What would be your playlist for June 2011 ? I always paints a doorway to the artist..

Dirk:I listen to a lot of ska and especially the old Ruds stuff. Other favours are Porcupine Tree, Incubus, Yann Tiersen.

Jörg:

new on my playlist is : Triangulation by Scuba (love it!!!) and everything from Shackleton

Axel: Popul Vuh “Letzte Tage, letzte Nächte”, AR&Machines „The green journey“ , Tangerin Dream „Stratosfear“

9. Will Hekate ever be coming to North America to perform are is the demand not there. You seem to be playing large events in Europe?

Dirk: It is not planned yet ,but everything can happen........it is of course very challenging for a so special band like Hekate to come to America and we would need quite a few gigs to make it happen , but you never know......In Europe we play smaller gigs in the moment , but after the release of „Welt der dunklen Gärten“ we hope to play some bigger festivals next year.

10. Myself being Asatru in belief do you feel the heathen elements and ways of religion are on the rise again or is it really a small pocket and I lost way of life.. Your music really touches that place in my beliefs and makes my rituals and rites all the more special and important..

Jörg:

At first it makes me very happy and also proud that our music is touching you in this way, because this is really intended . For me ,there is a strong spiritual element in the music of Hekate although the religious and philosophical believes of the 5 Hekate members differ from each other to some degree. But if we unite in music,a form of superordinated spirit takes place which i believe is like the true core or heart of spiritual work besides all the differences in the varyous religions.

11. Your website http://www.hekate.info/ seems to be on temp status for while is myspace and facebook more then enough to get to the digital world right now?

Achim:

The website of Hekate was published simultaneous to the album, but Facebook and Co. is still important to connect with our fans.

12. Thank you any closing thoughts place here..

Thank you so much for the interview Love and Light from Hekate.

New Reviews 7/10/2011

Obsequiae-Suspended in the Brume of Eos-CD (Bindrune Recordings)
Classical Blackened Prog metal is what this comes to mind with as I listen to it. I was honored enough to get to hear a few early tracks from this band as Tanner of the band gave me this special glimps and all I can say is the final product is even better. Do you remember bands like Ophthalamia and Sabbat (UK) those two projects most come to mind when listening to that with some elements of Summoning and older Haggard . I will say this is like not much I've heard in some time . The medieval and pagan elements mix in almost completely to the Blackened metal sound that presents itself before us with heavy elements of prog rock and neofolk . There is a thrashing side of Obsequiae as well that reminds me very much of Slough feg as well. Again this is one of those very special releases on Bindrune and its needed to be heard in its complete and full glory to understand all that is going on within and without the stories, hymns and songs throughout. With just as strong an ambiance and metallic overtone this will be something that will cross many boundaries and genres of music.. It is time once more to place the armor on and ride into the impending battle for valor, kingdom and freedom.. We have a very noble release here.

Falls of Rauros- The Light that dwells in rotten wood-CD (Bindrune Recordings)

Bindrune is a label that needs the ritualistic, folk and heathen element in there music almost as much as the Black or Doom elements. With Falls of Rauros I hear everything that Portland OR (Note I was told their from Portland ME Sorry for error) has become over the yrs. Its bringing the underground to the mainstream for those who want to hear it. With this release I can hear elements of Wolves in the throne room, Alcest, Fen and A Forest of Stars all rolled into one with an atmosphere second to none. You can actually feel the torment and love of a nature and old world that is being torn from the very soul of this band. There is a madness going on here that is more then just musical you can feel the hopeless and hopefullness (sometimes in the same song). I hate using the work Epic but that is just what a band like Falls of Rauros are. There are so many styles, ideals and movements going on here, This is not for the casual listener and that what makes it all the more special as with most Bindrune releases. There for us that love music , the old world and those values that were held in a time of honor and humanity. I hope this stays a bit more personal as it would be lost on many . Stellar release gentlemen....

Trials- Witness to the downfall-CD (Self Release)

Wow this is a hammer to face in the raw power that this chicago based unit present to us . If you like bands like Machine head/ Pantera met with Kiss it goodbye or Deadguy and then the vocal acrobatics of a Mike Patton or Dan Swano with the way it goes from Death to Thrash to Melodic to full on Hardcore. For a self released album the production is second to none and they do have current Novembers Doom Drummer on the kit for for this album but wow over all the complexity and maturity level for an unsigned band its really amazing. At times they even go into that Amorphis eastern music and melody. Trials looks like they have lived through a batch of them already to get an album like this out of the gate all alone . It would be a crying shame for this band to not have at least a good distribution and promotion network to spread the word.. Clawhammer pr make them Metal superstars as all they need is to be heard...

Brainoil- Death of this dry season-LP/Digital ( 20 Buck Spin)

Excellent another Sludgy Crusty Doom album that fits right up my alley with love of bands like Cavity, Buzzoven, Eyehategod and a new slew of limited releases on Southern lord from Planks, Drainland etc. This is noisy, drone filled dirty low end southern styled doom with a healthy does of Punk and hardcore in there diet. Love the very crust grind vocals with punk metal guitars and the dirgy low end. This is in kind with Noothgrush and His Hero is gone as well. If it was 10-15 yrs agon Slam a ham, Prank or Pessimisser would have jumped at the chance to feed the world this brand of sonic molasses.. Another band to remind me of the ABC NO RIO/ CBGB days of my youth.. Let the amps go to 11 and feed back and rumble till my ears can no longer hear the pain and suffering on this wonderful album...

MinusHuman-Bloodthrone-CD (Season of Mist)

Oh Fella's someone likes there Death and Black metal with elements of Power and Thrash metal and this is the melding of 4 styles of metal into a stew of of Power , Fury and Elegance all in one project. The vocals are very much in the style that bands like Immortal and Hypocrisy have become so well for. The Black Death growls with clean harmonic vocals in chorus style behind them from time to. MinusHuman as a Ihshan meets Devin Townsend vibe going on both music and vocally at times for me. There is something I can't really put my finger on but its making the album so damn catchy and making me want to listen to it repeat time. Its not like you haven't heard this style before , MinusHuman just do it in a rather interesting way but almost adding a punk element to it all. MinusHuman are a band that if they can continue ill open ears and eyes with they way they present modern metal music.

Ghost Brigade- Until Fear No Longer Defines Us-CD (Season of Mist)

So this starts out as a very somber acoustic based journey and as we enter the 2nd track it goes to a Neurosis meets Mastodon Vibe. This has post hardcore written all over it with a very Katatonia Doom metal edge to top it all off. The melody is a strong as the bombastic and majesty quality that comes across this release. There is a very Gothenburg Swedish metallic feeling going on like Opeth and Dark Tranquility both present on their newer releases. The very clean vocals with the deep brutal ones just add so much more to the release as a whole. There is an emotional side to Ghost Brigade as well but it never becomes emo in that way. Its more a Gothic Doom sound that has been lost for many yrs that was so strongly around with Tristiana, Theatre of Tragedy and Anathema.. Season of Mist is a label perfect for this larger then life sound over all. Well worth checking out as it maybe better then there last...

6 New Reviews 7/3/2011

Forest of the Soul- restless in flight-CD (Bindrune Recordings)

This is an interesting beast to say the least it like an acoustic verision of Opeth mix with elements of Porcupine Tree, Yes, Old Genesis, Aerial Ruin, Tantric, Kansas and Steve Von Till solo material.  Yes it very prog in nature  but that is part of its magic i feel. Love the very complex acoustic guitar and bass elements going on. Forest of the soul have an Americana / Blue Grass sound that is happening . This is very out of place for the Metallic doom and blackened world the Bindrune normally gives us.  There is a somber and ritualistic element going on there I thin this about would be so much more at home with Glass throat label or even a label like Inside out or  Laser's Edge.  The music with Forest of the Soul is so fragile and introspective. Love the harmony vocals there so passionate .  I really was not ready for this big thumbs up for a very special release.

Whitehorse- Progression-CD ( At a Loss)

This is floor dropping Doom with a drone and industrial element all going on at the same time. If your a fan of bands like Evoken, Thergothon, Mournful Congregation mix with Dolorian and Phobos  then you have a very close Idea of what is going on here. Slow, Massive, Low end tones with blackened and deep doomy vocals. This is the kind of music that brings on mental breakdowns to many. They have a love of the Crowbar doom sound at well esp in the guitar tone. There is a strong worship of Khanate as well going on here. Whitehorse is about the pain of the human condition and its work very very well. If your a fan of the extreme noisy doom then run don't walk for this one. No joke these 5 tracks maybe to much for some and its just the wa I like it ....

Nightbringer- Hierophany of the Open Grave- CD (Season of Mist Underground Activities)

Ah so Nightbringer is back with the Dissident Avant Black metal chaos that I loved so much from there last release. The element of haunting / unnerving sound in the bass and guitar with the vocals of those so close the the gates of sorrow is so brilliant. That with the sickly melodies and post metal riffs and just out right Post black metal  that bands like Blut Aus Nord and Negura Bunget have so tastefully mastered here comes Nightbringer to mix it up with bands with Deathspell Omega in the way its presented.  There is also an orchestral feeling to the way this album is created and designed just never becomes what bands like Dimmu Borgir or Emperor has done. There is something so different about this Colorado force that just takes them one step above. The have the riffs and the arrangements that makes you want to keep listening over and over again. Horns up for this Blackened experiment gone oh so right for the very very wrong...

http://season-of-mist.com/

Seven Witches- Call upon the Wicked- CD (Candlelight)

Over the top Prog/ Power metal that mixes elements of Nevermore, Iced Earth, Judas Priest, King Diamond and Savatage all mixed it to a beyond talented force from the USA.  Jack frost just knows how to make catchy complex heavy power metal . Alan Tecchio (Non fiction/ Hades) is out no and James Rivera (Helstar) is back. This actually add to the more  Warrel Dane approach to the operatic caterwauling ... Seven witches is just metal tride and true they blood , sweat and ooze the sound style and lifestyle. I will say this is some of the heaviest riffing I've heard from Jack since his days in Savatage. The classic metal sound is here  for all you fans. Love the solos as well as they work with the songs as a layer more then just over the top noodling. If I closed my eyes I swear this could be a lost unreleased Sanctuary album ..Time to get that demin, back patches and lighters out as arena metal is very much back with Seven Witches!!!!

http://candlelightrecordsusa.com/

Pestilence- Doctrine-CD (Mascot )

Prog/ Death fiends are back with a new release yrs after we have last scene them hit a very much prog, jazz avant sound. I feel that Pestilence though they have some really creative idea's really miss the boat with what there doing. These sound like pieces of songs rather the whole sounds. I get there very cutting edge at what they did in 1989-1993 but now there just really living off that past and rehashing albums and songs. Atheist seems to have grown do did Coroner over the yrs but Pestilence has just stay in the 90's and there roadrunner yrs. I was hoping for so much more and it just a collection of jazz metal sounds with odd times and deathish vocals...  I wanted to like this and I as just left flat...

Seven Sisters of Sleep- S/T-CD (Southern Lord)

Bring the Mother Fucking Sludgy, Crust filled , Noise monsters of Doom forward and just bow you bastards this is every thing I love about this scene if your into Old Cathderal, Eyehategod, Burning Witch, Noothgrush, Melvins, Cavity, Damad, Buzzoven and His Hero is gone then guess what  get that amp to 20 and let the bleeding feedback of this style through your speaker and then the world be set of fire as the rest die in the wonderful rapture of aural bliss. This is music that can just take the hate straight out of you and make you see how mortal you really are. This is for the dark and corrupted side of your mind. Where you need to release its dementia and let me tell you this band is perfect for this . Man I just want to put a head through a wall after listening to this. Power and pain all through a sonic wall of droning noise YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

http://southernlord.com/
